Tropos Networks [1] is a wireless mesh networking company that provides hardware, embedded software and network management application software for building large scale wireless networks. These networks are used by utilities, municipalities, public safety agencies, mines and others that need to communicate with fixed and mobile assets, as well as mobile workers, in the field. The company was founded in 2000 by Narasimha Chari, Devabhaktuni "Sri" Srikrishna, Christian Dubiel and Jonathan Goldenstein. It is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. In June 2012, it was acquired by ABB Power Grids Group, now Hitachi Energy.

Tropos has more than 850 customers in more than 50 countries around the world. The company's customer base is concentrated in the smart grid, municipal government, public safety and open pit mining vertical markets. Notable customers include Avista, [2] Glendale Water & Power, Duncan, Oklahoma, [3] and Lafayette Utilities System.

Venture investors include Benchmark Capital, Boston Millennia Partners, Cipio Partners, Duff Ackerman & Goodrich, Hanna Ventures, Integral Capital Partners and Voyager Capital. The Chairman of the Board of Directors is David Hanna of Hanna Ventures; board members include Curtis Feeny of Voyager Capital, Bill Gurley of Benchmark Capital and Tom Ayers, president and CEO of Tropos Networks. Tropos Network has been acquired by ABB Power Grids group in June 2012 now part of the Hitachi Energy portfolio.

Technology

Utilities deploying a smart grid use Tropos for building a regional-scale distribution area communications networks covering hundreds to thousands of square miles. Tropos provides high performance, highly reliable private IP broadband wireless networks that create a secure and scalable foundation upon which multiple smart grid applications including distribution automation, substation security, and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) can be deployed. Additionally, Tropos technology is employed by municipalities to improve efficiencies of a broad range of city services including Intelligent Transportation Systems, automated meter reading (AMR), public safety, and video surveillance.

A smart meter is an electronic device that records information such as consumption of electric energy, voltage levels, current, and power factor. Smart meters communicate the information to the consumer for greater clarity of consumption behavior, and electricity suppliers for system monitoring and customer billing. Smart meters typically record energy near real-time, and report regularly, short intervals throughout the day. Smart meters enable two-way communication between the meter and the central system. Such an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) differs from automatic meter reading (AMR) in that it enables two-way communication between the meter and the supplier. Communications from the meter to the network may be wireless, or via fixed wired connections such as power line carrier (PLC). Wireless communication options in common use include cellular communications, Wi-Fi, wireless ad hoc networks over Wi-Fi, wireless mesh networks, low power long-range wireless (LoRa), Wize ZigBee, and Wi-SUN.

Parent company Telular Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Avista Capital Partners, an American private equity firm. SkyBitz is a remote asset tracking and information management service provider, specializing in real-time decision-making tools for companies with unpowered assets such as tractor-trailers, intermodal containers, chassis, rail cars, power generators, heavy equipment, and other assets. They were acquired by Linear Technology, Inc in December 2011, which in turn was acquired by Analog Devices, Inc in 2017. Aussie Broadband (ABB) is an Australian operated telecommunications company that was formed in 2008 and is based in Morwell, Victoria, Australia. 

EnerNOC, is the largest provider of demand response worldwide, serving a capacity of 6GW across 8,000 customers worldwide, and a provider of energy management advisory and technology services for commercial, institutional, and industrial customers, as well as electric power grid operators and utilities. In addition to demand response, Enel X's offerings include energy procurement advisory services, utility bill management, demand-side management, energy management software and services, and intelligent energy storage and microgrid. In August 2017, EnerNOC was acquired by the Enel Group.
