True Crime Zine was an online magazine that reviews and critiques true-crime and fact-based books. It was also an online crime news aggregator. It was active between 2009 and 2013.

History

The site contained original content about high-profile crime cases and books, updating readers on the cases covered in the books it reviews.

Founded by Kim Cantrell and based in McMinnville, Tennessee, the magazine launched in 2009 as True Crime Book Reviews. In July 2012 it was expanded and renamed True Crime Zine. Before it launched, Cantrell had been a Top Reviewer for Amazon.com. [1]

Forbes' online magazine wrote about Cantrell and True Crime Zine in a May 2012 story. [1] In September 2010, Cantrell appeared on BlogTalkRadio's "True Murder" channel with host Dan Zupansky to discuss her reviews. [2]

Book awards

At the first of each year, the magazine announced the winners of its annual True Crime Awards based on readers' choices and votes. True Crime Zine Best of 2012 named crime writers Kathryn Casey, Ann Rule and Cathy Scott as its Top 3. [3]

The Halifax Reader included True Crime Zine's 2010 Editor's Choice Award in its "Tops in True Crime" yearly review. [4]

A zine is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via a copy machine. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation. A fanzine is a non-professional and non-official publication produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon for the pleasure of others who share their interest. The term was coined in an October 1940 science fiction fanzine by Russ Chauvenet and popularized within science fiction fandom, entering the Oxford English Dictionary in 1949.

Ann Rae Rule was an American author of true crime books and articles. She is best known for The Stranger Beside Me (1980), about the serial killer Ted Bundy, with whom Rule worked and whom she considered a friend, but was later revealed to be a murderer. Rule is also known for her book Small Sacrifices, about Oregon child murderer Diane Downs. Many of Rule's books center on murder cases that occurred in the Pacific Northwest and her adopted home state of Washington.

Dan Abrams is an American media entrepreneur, television host, commentator, and New York Times bestselling author. He is currently the ABC News chief legal correspondent and is the host of The Dan Abrams Show: Where Politics Meets The Law on SiriusXM's P.O.T.U.S. channel. He was the host of Live PD on the A&E cable network. Abrams also created and hosts Court Cam, a Law&Crime production on A&E. He is a legal commentator, author, and former anchor of Nightline. Abrams also worked as the chief legal correspondent and analyst for NBC News and general manager of MSNBC, and doubled as an anchor for the same network. In 2021 Abrams purchased Laurel Lake Vineyards on Long Islands' North Fork, which he plans to relaunch in Summer 2021 under a name inspired by his two children, Ev&Em Vineyards.

Cathleen Scott is a Los Angeles Times bestselling American true-crime writer and investigative journalist best known for penning the biographies and true crime books The Killing of Tupac Shakur and The Murder of Biggie Smalls, both bestsellers in the United States and United Kingdom. She grew up in La Mesa, California and later moved to Mission Beach, California, where she was a single parent to a son, Raymond Somers Jr. Her hip-hop books are based on the drive-by shootings that killed the rappers six months apart in the midst of what has been called the West Coast-East Coast war. Each book is dedicated to the rappers' mothers.

Kathryn Casey

Kathryn Casey is an American writer of mystery novels and non-fiction books. She is best known for writing She Wanted It All, which recounts the case of Celeste Beard, who married an Austin multimillionaire only to convince her lesbian lover, Tracey Tarlton, to kill him.

Jimmy Lee Chandler was a Southern poet and novelist from Tennessee. Chandler's poetry evolved from the post-beat generation through the underground scene. His 276-page poetry collection Smoke & Thunder, was published in 2003. In 2006 he published his first novel, Parallel Blues.

Kenneth Martin Edwards is a British crime novelist, whose work has won awards in the UK and the United States. As a crime fiction critic and historian, and also in his career as a solicitor, he has written non-fiction books and many articles. He is the current President of the Detection Club and in 2020 was awarded the Crime Writers’ Association’s Diamond Dagger, the highest honour in British crime writing, in recognition of the ‘sustained excellence’ of his work in the genre.

Kerry Greenwood Australian author and lawyer (born 1954)

Kerry Isabelle Greenwood is an Australian author and lawyer. She has written many plays and books, most notably a string of historical detective novels centred on the character of Phryne Fisher. She writes mysteries, science-fiction, historical fiction, children's stories, and plays. Greenwood earned the Australian women's crime fiction Davitt Award in 2002 for her young adult novel The Three-Pronged Dagger.

Michael Capuzzo is an American journalist and author best known for his New York Times-bestselling nonfiction books The Murder Room and Close to Shore. The Murder Room, the true story of a private dining club of famous detectives who solve cold murders, and Close to Shore, an historic thriller and recreation of the first American shark attack in World War I-era New Jersey, both enjoyed wide acclaim from critics and authors such as Gay Talese, Mark Bowden, John Sanford, and Michael Connelly. Capuzzo signed a contract for a new book with Simon & Schuster in 2011.

Murder of a Mafia Daughter: The Life and Tragic Death of Susan Berman is a nonfiction book by author and journalist Cathy Scott about the 2000 murder of Susan Berman. Murder of a Mafia Daughter was first released in hardcover in 2002 by Barricade Books. A 2nd edition in trade-size paperback was released in June 2015 following the March 2015 arrest of suspect Robert Durst in Berman's murder.

Ron Franscell is an American journalist, novelist and true crime writer best known for the true account The Darkest Night about the 1973 crimes against two childhood friends in the small community where Franscell grew up.

Death in the Desert: The Ted Binion Homicide Case is a 2000 biographical and crime account by the American journalist and crime author Cathy Scott, with a second edition in 2012. The book, which was the first of four released about the case, details the homicide investigation and ensuing trial and re-trial of Ted Binion’s live-in girlfriend Sandy Murphy and her lover Rick Tabish in connection with Binion's death.

Lost Girls is a 2012 non-fiction book by the American-Canadian author and journalist Caitlin Rother about the rape and murder of teen-age girls Amber Dubois in 2009 and Chelsea King in 2010 at the hands of John Albert Gardner. It was published in July 2012 by Kensington Books. It was the author's eighth book.
