Ato Tsegay Berhe Hadera is an Ethiopian politician who served as president of the Tigray Region from 2001 to 2010, [1] after serving as vice-president of the regional state of Tigray for 10 years (from 1991 to 2001). [2] He also served as the vice-chairman of TPLF (Tigray People Liberation Front) from April 2001 until December 2010. He was succeeded in both positions by Ato Abay Weldu in December 2010 and September 2017. [3]

The Woyane rebellion was an uprising in Tigray Province,Ethiopia against the centralization process from the government of Emperor Haile Selassie which took place in May–November 1943. The rebels called themselves the Woyane,a name borrowed from a game played locally between competing groups of young men from different villages,which connoted a spirit of resistance and unity. After nearly succeeding in overrunning the whole province,the rebels were defeated with the support of aircraft from the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force. Out of all the rebellions that engulfed Ethiopia during Haile Selassie's rule,this was the most serious internal threat that he faced.
Debretsion Gebremichael is an Ethiopian politician and current president of the Tigray Region and chairman of Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). His position as titular head of the Tigray Region is disputed by the federal government of Ethiopia who in November 2020 appointed Mulu Nega as the chief executive of the Transitional Government of Tigray,succeeded by Abraham Belay. Since July 2021,Debretsion leads again the Tigray Region,while Abraham Belay left the transitional government to become Ethiopia's minister of Defence.
Ato Abay Weldu is an Ethiopian politician who served as president of the Tigray Region from 2010 to 2018. He also served as the chairman of TPLF from September 2012 until November 2017. He was succeeded in both positions by Debretsion Gebremichael in January 2018 and November 2017. Abay Weldu joined TPLF in the late 1970s and has served as a member of the executive Committees of TPLF and now defunct EPRDF since 2000.

On 3–4 November 2020,forces loyal to the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) launched attacks on the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) Northern Command headquarters in Mekelle and bases in Adigrat,Agula,Dansha,and Sero in the Tigray Region,marking the beginning of the Tigray War. Mulugeta Gebrehiwot Berhe is a peace researcher holding the position,as of 2021,of a senior fellow at the World Peace Foundation,Tufts University. He was a rebel of the Tigray People's Libration Front (TPLF) when the TPLF was a guerilla army. He led the disarmament,demobilization and reintegration program of the 380,000 armed rebels after the TPLF gained control of Ethiopia in 1991. Mulugeta was a mediator in the Darfur Peace Agreement negotiations that led to the 2006 Abuja Agreement and the 2011 Doha Agreement during peace process for the War in Darfur. He was founding Director of the Institute for Peace and Security Studies in 2007.
The Tigray Defense Forces,colloquially called the Tigray Army is a paramilitary group located in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. It was founded by former generals of the Ethiopian Military in 2020 to combat federal forces enforcing national government mandates in the Tigray region,culminating in 2020 with the outbreak of the Tigray War. The TDF has made use of guerilla tactics and strategies. Human rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have reported that the TDF has committed war crimes against civilians including gang rape and extrajudicial killing during their occupation of both the Afar and Amhara regions. According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Justice,TDF combatants have been found liable for upwards of 540 civilians casualties. as of 28 December 2021.
