Tyrone Nix (born September 30, 1972) is an American football coach who currently serves as defensive coordinator for the Tarleton State Texans. Nix is the former defensive coordinator for the Middle Tennessee football team, the former associate head coach and defensive coordinator for Ole Miss Rebels football, and the former defensive coordinator for the South Carolina Gamecocks and Southern Miss Golden Eagles. He is the brother of Derrick Nix, a former Southern Miss star and the current wide receivers coach at Ole Miss.

Playing career

Nix was a former starting linebacker. Following high school at Etowah High School in Attalla, Alabama, he went to the University of Southern Mississippi and played linebacker from 1990 through 1993. He was named Golden Eagle team captain in 1993. As a freshman, Nix was one of three freshmen to play in the 1990 All-American Bowl. [1] He was also named to the All-South team and National Independent team as both a junior and a senior. [1] In the year 1991, Nix became a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity through the Theta Eta chapter at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Coaching career

Southern Miss

In 2001, Nix became the defensive coordinator at Southern Miss at the age of 29, making him the youngest coordinator in Division I-A. By 2003 he was a finalist for the Broyles Award, which recognizes the nation’s top assistant coaches.

His impact as a defensive coordinator was immediately felt as he led the 2001 Golden Eagle defense, which had lost 7 starters from the previous season, to rankings of 8th in the nation in scoring defense and 11th in the nation in total defense.

In his first three years as defensive coordinator at USM, Coach Nix’s defenses stayed in the top 15 nationally in scoring defense.

South Carolina

Coach Nix began his tenure at South Carolina in 2005 as co-defensive coordinator, sharing the responsibility with his long-time colleague John Thompson. Near the end of that season, impressed by Coach Nix’s coaching prowess, Head Coach Steve Spurrier promoted him to sole defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Prior to his promotion, the Gamecocks were giving up over 27 points per game. After the promotion, and under Coach Nix’s sole guidance, the USC defense held opponents to just 17 points per game and had wins over the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee which hadn't happened in over 20 years.

Ole Miss

On December 11, 2007, Nix accepted the job as defensive coordinator at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), to serve under new Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt.

During the 2008 season, Nix had Ole Miss defense ranked among the national leaders in points per game (17.8, 14th in FBS,) yards per game (204.8, 16th in FBS,) and ranked 5th nationally in total rushing yards (1020.) [2] The 2008 defense included firth team All-American DT Peria Jerry and third team DE Greg Hardy. The season was capped off with a 47-34 win over Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl and an 8-4 record.

Following the 2009 season, Houston Nutt promoted Nix to the role of assistant head coach [3] after being nominated for the Frank Broyles Award. [4] Upon the hiring of Hugh Freeze as head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels on December 6, 2011, after Nutt was fired, Nix was dismissed as well.[ citation needed ]

Middle Tennessee

After interviewing with the Oklahoma Sooners, [5] Nix was named co-defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State on February 22, 2012 [6] under Rick Stockstill. Nix was fired December 28, 2016. [7]

Texas A&M

Nix served as the senior defensive analyst for the Aggies in the 2017 season.[ citation needed ]

UTSA

On Feb. 3, 2020, Nix was named defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the UTSA Roadrunners. [8] UTSA placed him on leave on November 14 pending the results of an unspecified internal investigation. [9] On February 7, 2021 it was reported Nix would not be retained following an investigation into violating university policy on inappropriate sexual conduct, though the University reinstated Nix on a 12 month notice on condition that he take a misconduct course upon his return. [10]

Carl William Torbush Jr. was an American American football and baseball coach. He served as the head football coach at Louisiana Tech University in 1987, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1997 to 2000, and East Tennessee State University (ETSU) from 2013 to 2017, compiling a career college football record of 31–48. Outside of football, Torbush was the head baseball coach at Southeastern Louisiana University from 1977 to 1979, tallying a mark of 75–58. Torbush retired from coaching in December 2017.

Mike Markuson is an American gridiron football coach. He was formerly the offensive line coach for Jackson State and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Markuson was the offensive line coach at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from January to September 9, 2012.

Reginald Wayne Herring is an American football coach and former player and most recently the linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). A former linebacker at Florida State University, he began his coaching career in 1981. He has now coached for 36 years across college and the NFL. Herring arrived in Denver to coach linebackers in 2015 after previous stops in the league with Chicago (2014), Houston and Dallas (2008–10). Herring has coached nine linebackers who have made Pro Bowl appearances during their careers, including outside linebackers DeMarcus Ware (9), Mario Williams (4), and Connor Barwin (1), and inside linebackers Zach Thomas (7), Keith Brooking (5), Lance Briggs (7), Brian Cushing (1), Sean Lee (2) and DeMeco Ryans (2). Laurens Ellis Johnson is a former American football coach. He served as head football coach at Gardner–Webb University in 1983, The Citadel from 2001 to 2003, and the University of Southern Mississippi in 2012.

The 2010 Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders football team represented Middle Tennessee State University as a member of the Sun Belt Conference during the 2010 NCAA Division I FBS football season. Led by fifth-year head coach Rick Stockstill, the Blue Raiders compiled an overall record 6–7 with a mark of 5–3 in conference play, placing third in the Sun Belt. Middle Tennessee was invited to the GoDaddy.com Bowl, where they lost to the Miami RedHawks, 35–21. The team played home games at Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

James Walter Hopson is an American football coach and former player. In 2016, Hopson made history as the only head coach in the history of the state of Mississippi to guide two different in-state universities to bowl games when he led the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles to a victory in the New Orleans Bowl. During his head-coaching tenure with the University of Southern Mississippi (2016–2020), Hopson ushered the Golden Eagles to four straight bowl-eligible seasons, with his defenses and offenses ranking in the top-5 and top-25 in the NCAA, respectively. Additionally, in his four full seasons from 2016 to 2019, Hopson guided the University of Southern Mississippi to 20 conference wins, which made him the second-winningest coach in Conference-USA during that span.

James Edward Carmody Jr. was a former American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Southern Mississippi from 1982 to 1987, compiling a career record of 37–29. Carmody's 1982 Golden Eagles team went into Bryant–Denny Stadium defeated Bear Bryant's Alabama team that had won 56 consecutive home games entering the contest. Carmody also served as an assistant coach at Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi and the University of North Carolina.

The 2017 Ole Miss Rebels football team represented the University of Mississippi in the 2017 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Rebels played their home games at Vaught–Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi and competed in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). They were led by then-interim head coach Matt Luke. They finished the season 6–6, 3–5 in SEC play to finish in sixth place in the Western Division.

Kane Wommack is an American football coach and former player who is currently the defensive coordinator at the University of Alabama. He previously served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Indiana from 2018 to 2020 and as the head coach of South Alabama from 2021 to 2023.

Bryan Brown is an American football coach. He is currently a defensive coordinator at Ole Miss. He previously served as defensive coordinator at Cincinnati, as well as Appalachian State and Louisville under current Cincinnati head coach Scott Satterfield. He has also played at Ole Miss.

Derrick Nix is an American football coach and former player who is currently the offensive coordinator at Auburn University. He played college football at Southern Miss where he was the only player in Conference-USA history to rush for over 1,000 yards in three seasons.
