Tyscot Records is an independent American gospel music record label based in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Most of the singing was done a cappella. The first published use of the term "gospel song" probably appeared in 1874. The original gospel songs were written and composed by authors such as George F. Root, Philip Bliss, Charles H. Gabriel, William Howard Doane, and Fanny Crosby. Gospel music publishing houses emerged. The advent of radio in the 1920s greatly increased the audience for gospel music. Following World War II, gospel music moved into major auditoriums, and gospel music concerts became quite elaborate.
A record label, or record company, is a brand or trademark associated with the marketing of music recordings and music videos. Sometimes, a record label is also a publishing company that manages such brands and trademarks, coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos, while also conducting talent scouting and development of new artists, and maintaining contracts with recording artists and their managers. The term "record label" derives from the circular label in the center of a vinyl record which prominently displays the manufacturer's name, along with other information. Within the mainstream music industry, recording artists have traditionally been reliant upon record labels to broaden their consumer base, market their albums, and be both promoted and heard on music streaming services, radio, and television. Record labels also provide publicists, who assist performers in gaining positive media coverage, and arrange for their merchandise to be available via stores and other media outlets.

Tyscot Records was founded by Craig Tyson and Dr. Leonard Scott [1] in 1976 in order to record their church choir, Christ Church Apostolic Radio Choir.
Bishop Leonard Stephen Scott is an American gospel musician and pastor of Rock Community Church. He started his music career, in 1989, with Tyscot Records releasing Holy, and they have released all of his albums. Scott has released eleven albums with three of those charting on the Billboard magazine Gospel Albums chart.

It now stands as the oldest black-owned Gospel recording label in the nation. Dr. Scott and Tyson established Tyscot Records as a recording vehicle for a local church choir project. Dr. Leonard Scott initially operated the company (Tyscot Records) from offices in his dental practice. The company faced hard financial times in the beginning phases and sometime later Craig Tyson decided to relinquish his share in the company. In the 1980s the label gained momentum by signing artists such as the Rev. Bill Sawyer and the Christian Tabernacle Choir, and Robert Turner and the Silver Hearts.
In 1988, Dr. Scott’s son, Bryant Scott was hired as the label’s General Manager. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Tyscot Records experienced tremendous growth and success mostly due to the recordings of a new artist at that time named Rev. John P. Kee. Rev. Kee and his New Life Community Choir climbed the charts with each successive recording to land in the number one position in 1992 with the recording "We Walk By Faith".
The company faced a severe crisis in 1993 when their distributor, Spectra filed for bankruptcy and left owing Tyscot Records over a ½ million dollars that had been generated from the sale of its products. This meant, in turn, that Tyscot Records would not be able to pay its artists or their bills.
"But each of our artists stayed with us and renewed their contracts even though there was no guarantee they would be compensated,” said Scott. As the 1990s progressed, Tyscot Records experienced tremendous success with John P. Kee, whose 1999 release, “Not Guilty”, sold more than 500,000 copies and gave Tyscot their first RIAA certified Gold Record.
Today Tyscot Records has a roster of artists who boast a national and international following, including Deitrick Haddon and the Voices of Unity, the Rance Allen Group, Bishop Leonard Scott (founder of Tyscot Records), Shirley Murdock, Rodnie Bryant, Anointed Pace Sisters, Damita Haddon, Bishop Larry Trotter, Bishop Noel Jones and the City of Refuge Sanctuary Choir, VaShawn Mitchell, Morris Chapman, DeAndre Patterson, Lucinda Moore, Carman, and the Inner City Mass Choir.
Tyscot Recording Company is in the near north side of Indianapolis. The company staff consists of President, Executive Assistant, Senior Director of Marketing, VP of Promotions, A&R Representative, Marketing & Promotions Coordinator, contracted Public Relations personnel, interns and a host of volunteers. All Tyscot Records products are distributed by Ryko Distribution for the general market and Word Distribution for the CBA (Christian Booksellers Association) in association with Taseis Media Group.
CBA, subtitled "The Association for Christian Retail Since 1950", is a trade association that was established in 1950. The association was first organized by 219 Christian bookstores and, by 2011, had grown to include 1700 stores. The number of member stores expanded considerably in the 1990s with the rise of online shopping. Bill Anderson is president of the association and Curtis Riskey is executive director. By 2014, CBA had discontinued its winter trade fair in response to the closing of many of the association's member stores. CBA has guidelines for books sold by its member stores to prohibit offensive content including profanity, alcohol consumption, and references to luck. When a significant minority of customers at CBA's member stores take offense to a book, CBA pressures all member stores to stop selling books by that book's publisher. CBA purchases films from Pure Flix Entertainment.
Tyscot is home to several notable gospel artists such as Garnelle Hubbard-Spearman Deitrick Haddon, Chris Jones, Mark Hubbard, Brent Jones, Oscar Hayes, Cedric Ford, Javen, Lucinda Moore, and seminal CCM artist Carman. [2] Label co-founder Craig Tyson died on November 30, 2006 in Indianapolis.
Deitrick Vaughn Haddon is an American gospel singer, songwriter, music producer, pastor, and actor. He is best known for progressive gospel, and contemporary styles of music. He is also one of the cast members in Oxygen's reality television show Preachers of L.A.
Mark S. Hubbard is an American gospel musician. He started his music career, in 1992, with the release of Trust in Jesus by Tyscot Records. This was his only album to chart on the Billboard magazine Gospel Albums chart. The next two albums, No, I Won't Turn Back in 1995 and He's up There in 1996, were released by Tyscot Records. The 1998 release, Different Level, was released by Platinum Entertainment, and his fifth album, Blessin' Waitin' on Me, was released by Utopia Music Group. His backing choir was called, The United Voices for Christ, now affectionately known as “The Voices”.
Brent Ray Jones is an American gospel musician, pianist, and choir conductor. He started his music career, in 1999, with the release of Brent Jones & the T.P. Mobb with Majestic Recordings, and this charted on three Billboard magazine charts. His second album, Beautiful, came out in 2002 with EMI GMG Records, which this charted three charts. The third album, The Ultimate Weekend, released in 2007 by Tyscot Records, and this placed on the Billboard magazine Gospel Albums chart. He released, Joy Comin', in 2014 with Echopark Records, and this placed upon the Gospel Albums chart.
