U. Vasuki is an Indian politician and trade unionist from Tamil Nadu. As of 2017, she is a central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the National Vice President of the All India Democratic Women's Association. [1]

Biography

Vasuki was born and raised in the suburb of Uraiyur in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, [2] to communist politicians R. Umanath and Pappa Umanath. [3] Her father, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)), was elected two times each to the Lok Sabha (1962 and 1977) and the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (1977 and 1980). Her mother, a founding member of the All India Democratic Women's Association, [4] was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Thiruverumbur constituency in 1989.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in commerce, Vasuki joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (abbreviated CPI(M) or CPM) in 1977. She started her career as a banking professional and was associated with the Canara Bank and the Union Bank of India. [5] She opted for voluntary retirement from service in 2000 to become a full-time member of the CPM. [2]

Vasuki unsuccessfully contested in the 2014 Indian general election from Chennai North. [6] [7] Following that, in the 2016 Tamil Nadu assembly election she contested from Madurai West and lost. [8]

2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election

The thirteenth legislative assembly election, of Tamil Nadu was held on 8 May 2006. It was held for all 234 constituencies to elect the government in the state for the following five years. The votes were counted three days later on 11 May 2006 and all the results were out by the end of the day. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led (DMK) front won the elections, with the DMK emerging as the single-largest party with 96 seats, and its leader, M Karunanidhi was sworn in as Chief Minister for a fifth and final term. This election marked the first time the state saw a hung assembly with no party gaining a majority of its own. As a result, DMK formed a minority government with its allies, which is the first in the state since the 1952 election. 13th Assembly was instituted due to this election.

Natarajan has secured about 571,150 votes in this election. P. R. Natarajan from Coimbatore along with Su. Venkatesan from Madurai are the two Communist Party of India ( Marxist) MPs from Tamil Nadu. P.R. Natarajan was also a member of the 15th Lok Sabha, when he defeated R. Prabhu of Indian National Congress in 2009, with a margin of over 35000 votes.

His second novel Veera Yuga Nayagan Velpari was serialised in Tamil popular magazine Ananda Vikatan. He is the general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association. S. Venkatesan contested as CPI(M) candidate in the 2019 Indian general election from Madurai. He was elected to the Lok Sabha with a margin of 1.39 Lakhs of votes.

Pappa Umanath was an Indian politician from the southern state of Tamil Nadu and a women's rights activist who co-founded the All India Democratic Women's Association in 1973. She was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and was elected from the Thiruverumbur Constituency to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 1989.
