UCD Philosophy Society

The Philosophy Society of University College Dublin (UCD Philsoc) was founded in 1965. The purpose of the society is to "encourage the learning, thinking and discussion of philosophical ideas; and to act as a social forum of exchange for those interested in philosophical or intellectual matters".[ citation needed ]

Events

The Philosophy Society regularly invites notable speakers to deliver individual addresses. Former speakers have included Milo Yiannopoulos, [1] Robert Fisk, [2] Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental, [3] Norman Finkelstein, [3] Professor Richard Swinburne [4] and Professor Noam Chomsky. [5]

The society hosts public debates in which both topical issues and age-old philosophical questions are discussed. Speakers in the debates consist of UCD students and of academics.[ citation needed ] In 2016, the society hosted a debate on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict with the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland (Ahmad Abdelrazek) and Israeli Ambassador to Ireland (Boaz Modai). Maynooth is also the only university town in Ireland, all other universities being based within cities.

Wesley College is an independent co-educational secondary school for day and boarding students in Ballinteer, Dublin, Ireland. Wesley College is under the control of a Board of Governors, appointed each year by the Methodist Church in Ireland.

Richard Kearney is an Irish philosopher and public intellectual specializing in contemporary continental philosophy. He is the Charles Seelig Professor in Philosophy at Boston College and has taught at University College Dublin, the Sorbonne, the University of Nice, and the Australian Catholic University. He is the author of 23 books on European philosophy and literature and has edited or co-edited over 20 more. He was formerly a member of the Arts Council of Ireland, the Higher Education Authority of Ireland and chairman of the Irish School of Film at University College Dublin. He is also a member of the Royal Irish Academy. As a public intellectual in Ireland, he was involved in drafting a number of proposals for a Northern Irish peace agreement. He has presented five series on culture and philosophy for Irish and British television and broadcast extensively on the European media. He is currently international director of the Guestbook Project.

The Literary and Historical Society (L&H) is the oldest society in University College Dublin (UCD), which according to its constitution is the 'College Debating Union'. Founded in 1855 by Cardinal John Henry Newman, as of 2017 it had over 5000 enrolled members, and has been the largest student society in UCD.

The UCC Philosophical Society, commonly known as the Philosoph, is the largest debating society at University College Cork, Ireland. The Philosoph was founded in 1850, making it the oldest society at UCC. The society carries out a number of functions, including weekly debates with guest speakers, participating in debating competitions, running workshops for the students of UCC to develop their public speaking skills and running debating competitions and workshops for schoolchildren. In the 1960s Seán MacBride SC and Nobel Peace Prize winner called the Philosoph "the centre of independent thought in Ireland" when discussing the state of the nation.

The James Joyce Award, also known as the Honorary Fellowship of the Society, is an award given by the Literary and Historical Society (L&H) of University College Dublin (UCD) for those who have achieved outstanding success in their given field; recipients have ranged from respected academics, lauded political figures, skilled actors and, like James Joyce himself, writers. It is the highest award that an Irish University society can give. It is named after one of the society's most distinguished alumni, James Joyce, the author of Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake.

The Law Society, University College Cork, is an academic student society at University College Cork (UCC). Amongst the society's core activities are hosting regular house debates and guest addresses, debating, representing the educational interests of its members, running various moot court competitions and organising a social calendar. The society hosts an annual law conference which is attended by students and local practitioners alike, and is responsible for the editing and publication of the Cork Online Law Review (COLR).

The UCD Law Society is one of the largest student societies in Europe. Established in 1911 as 'The Legal and Economic Society', as of 2009 it had approximately 4100 members drawn from the various faculties of the university. Weekly Tuesday night debates during term are the society's core activity. Individuals who have addressed the society include President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, former Irish Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern and President of the European Council Donald Tusk. The society's motto is "Ar son na Córa".

The Literary and Scientific Society of the Queen's University of Belfast is the university's debating society. The purposes of the Society, as per its Laws are to "encourage debating, oratory and rhetoric throughout the student body of the University and beyond".

University College Dublin is a public research university in Dublin, Ireland, and a member institution of the National University of Ireland. With 33,284 students, it is Ireland's largest university, and amongst the most prestigious universities in the country. Five Nobel Laureates are among UCD's alumni and current and former staff. Additionally, four Irish Taoiseach and three Irish Presidents have graduated from UCD, along with one President of India.

The University College Dublin Economics Society is a group that promotes engagement with economics while promoting a "feeling of community" at University College Dublin among students interested in economics. The society has over 700 members drawn from different faculties in the college. Individuals who have addressed the society had included Governor of the Irish Central Bank Patrick Honohan, and economists David McWilliams and Morgan Kelly.

Professor Philip Nolan is the Director General of Science Foundation Ireland since January 2022. He previously served as chair of NPHET's Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group from March 2020 to February 2022, president of Maynooth University from August 2011 to October 2021, deputy president of University College Dublin for academic affairs and registrar from 2004 to 2011, and was a medical and surgical intern at St. Vincent's University Hospital from 1991 to 1992.
