UCMDB is a software product from Micro Focus that generates and maintains a Configuration Management Database of information technology items. It includes a mechanism for automated discovery of IT infrastructure components, such as computers and network devices.

The DDMa component (Discovery and Dependency mapping Advanced) of UCMDB works by scanning ranges of IP addresses within pre-set probe IP ranges, using ping, ICMP echo requests and Nmap to locate live IP addresses and open TCP ports, and IP address harvesting techniques by querying ARP/Cache tables of level 3 network devices. Resulting current IP addresses are then translated into CIs which function as input for deeper level discovery. The pyramid model is designed to ensure that only relevant sources are being queried, resulting in lower network and node load.

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network management protocol used on UDP/IP networks whereby a DHCP server dynamically assigns an IP address and other network configuration parameters to each device on a network so they can communicate with other IP networks. A DHCP server enables computers to request IP addresses and networking parameters automatically from the Internet service provider (ISP), reducing the need for a network administrator or a user to manually assign IP addresses to all network devices. In the absence of a DHCP server, a computer or other device on the network needs to be manually assigned an IP address, or to assign itself an APIPA address, which will not enable it to communicate outside its local subnet.

Devices that typically support SNMP include cable modems, routers, switches, servers, workstations, printers, and more.

Tivoli Change and Configuration Management Database is IBM's strategic tool that is said to automatically discover the physical and application infrastructure in an enterprise, given the appropriate credentials. The low level component of CCMDB is called Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager. TADDM creates comprehensive application maps that include complete run-time dependencies, deep information about the Configuration Items (CIs) and tracks changes to the CIs. Deploying TADDM is the first step in populating a Change and Configuration Management Database (CCMDB) that serves as the basis for the automation of ITIL processes such as configuration and change management. Management Component Transport Protocol (MCTP) is a protocol designed by the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) to support communications between different intelligent hardware components that make up a platform management subsystem, providing monitoring and control functions inside a managed computer system.
