Early history

The French-built UMM 4x4 Cournil was launched in Portugal by Portuguese car maker UMM in 1977. It was designed by the French engineer, Bernard Cournil mainly for agricultural and industrial issues. It was powered by an Indenor-Peugeot 2.1 l diesel engine matched to a 4-speed manual gearbox made also by Peugeot. The transfer case was built in-house. It was available in three versions: Randonneur (only 4 or 5 are known to exist in Portugal), Tracteur (pick-up version of the Randonneur) and the much more common Entrepreneur stretched larger version. UMM had the sales rights to the Cournil outside of France, and later took over production entirely.

UMM is born

In 1979 UMM began Portuguese production of a gently restyled UMM 4x4 Cournil with a 2.1 Litre Diesel engine. It dropped the Cournil designation and was available with new equipment. There was only one trim: the Entrepreneur.

In 1981, plastic rear view mirrors were introduced. In 1982, it featured bigger doors and a new Indenor-Peugeot 2.3 Litre Diesel engine. In 1983, the transmission was switched to a four-speed ZF unit.

In the year 2000, UMM launched a new version of the Alter, the Alter 2000. With a 2.1 litre Turbo Diesel engine made by Peugeot, this engine was claimed to be quieter, more fuel efficient and had more torque. The suspension, the brakes system and interior were redesigned. It was available in several trims and chassis configurations. Only 25 cars were made, the majority still in Portugal.

Bernard Cournil was a French vehicle maker who progressed from improving other people’s vehicles to manufacturing his own during the late 1950s. Rights to manufacture his design were subsequently held by a succession of businesses in Portugal after the French creator of the vehicle had disappeared from the picture. The vehicle built was also called the Cournil, and was intended mainly as an all-round offroad vehicle especially suited for farm usage: it could pull a plow and was offered with a PTO, cranes, or even machine gun mountings.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Peugeot J9</span> Motor vehicle

The Peugeot J9 is a van manufactured by Peugeot from January 1981 until 1991. It was also manufactured under license by commercial vehicles manufacturer Karsan in Turkey, from 1981 until 2010. After a facelift in 1991, in 2006, Karsan released the restyled J9 Premier. Production ended in 2010 when the J9 was replaced by the closely related Karsan J10.
