University of Namibia Football Club, commonly known as UNAM F.C., is a football club founded in the late 1990s by the University of Namibia from Windhoek in Namibia. [2] [1] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Contents

The team, as well as the women's football team (UNAM Bokkies), plays home games at the UNAM Stadium (Unam Sports Ground) in the southwest of Windhoek. [7]

History

Players were originally exclusively recruited from the University of Namibia through the Unam home league. [8]

In the 2002–03 season, UNAM FC was promoted from the Namibia Second Division to the Namibia First Division.

In August 2014, the club acquired the right to start in the highest Namibian league, the Namibia Premier League, from Ramblers FC. Thus, in the 2014/15 season, UNAM FC competed in the first division for the first time. [9]

On 2 October 2014,Grand Master Printing owed by former UNAM student and businessman Eliaser Ndimulunde took over the vacant position of shirt sponsor for N$60,000 per season. [10]

In February 2023, the club announced that MUMI would become the main shirt sponsor in a 3-year deal of N$30,000 per year. [1]

The Namibia Premier League (NPL) was the highest level of domestic association football in Namibia until it was disbanded following the 2018–19 season. The league was established in 1990 and was trimmed to 12 teams from the traditional 16 in 2005. It was disbanded in 2020 after ongoing problems with the Namibia Football Association, which finally ended the relationship. The NFA founded the Namibia Football Premier League to replace it. The new league kicked off with the 2022/2023 season with African Stars against Unam at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium.
