UPM Press is the university press of Universiti Putra Malaysia. The press is one of the entities under the Office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation, University Putra Malaysia. [1] UPM Press operates the UPM Press Bookshop [2] and the publisher for the official academic journal of University Putra Malaysia, the Pertanika journals.

History

The council of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (former name of Universiti Putra Malaysia) approved the proposal to establish the press during their 15th meeting on 9 June 1977. In the first Committee of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Press meeting several manuscripts were considered for publications. Two manuscripts were accepted, one of them is an original work and another one is revised edition. The original work titled "Introduction to Veterinary Microbiology" by Prof. M.A. Soltys was at the time in the process for publication. The revised edition was the work of Prof. E.J.H. Corner titled "Wayside Trees of Malaya'. [3]

The book "Introduction to Veterinary Microbiology" was completed when Prof. Emeritus Soltys and the dean of the veterinary school in Saskatchewan, Professor L. Smith, were establishing under CIDA sponsorship, the veterinary faculty at the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. The book is the first book published by Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Press. [4]

In July 1978, the press published the first issue of Pertanika journal. The first publication was managed by a board of editors as the Subcommittee of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Press. [3]

In 2015, at the 1Malaysia Book Expo the Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi launched the book Hang Tuah: Catatan Okinawa published by UPM Press and written by Prof. Emeritus Dr. Hashim Musa and Dr. Rohaidah Kamaruddin. [5]

Beginning February 1, 2020, UPM Press was upgraded and became the University Publishing Centre headed by a Director. [1] The first director is Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohamed Thariq Bin Hameed Sultan. [6]

The UPM Press Bookshop officially began operation on 27 September 2019 after being inaugurated by Prof. Datin Paduka Dato' Dr. Aini Ideris, Vice Chancellor of UPM. [2] [7]

Dzulkifli bin Abdul Razak is a Malaysian emeritus professor, educationist and scientist who has served as the 6th Rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) since 1 August 2018. He was the President of the International Association of Universities from 2012 to 2016, and Chairman of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) Board of Directors from April 2016 to September 2018.

Datin Paduka Dato' Aini Ideris is a Malaysian academic and veterinarian. She served as the 8th Vice-Chancellor of UPM from 1 January 2016 until 31 August 2020. Her research interests include disease control and productions of vaccines for poultry.

Mohd Roslan Sulaiman is a Malaysian academic administrator. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia from 1 September 2020 until 31 August 2023. He obtained his degree in Veterinary Medicine from Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in 1994 and doctoral degree in Nervous System Physiology from University of Edinburgh in 1999. As of 2020, he has published more than 200 research results in high-impact journals.

Biswajeet Pradhan is a spatial scientist, modeller, author and who is now working as a Distinguished Professor and the founding Director of the Centre for Advanced Modelling and Geo-spatial Information Systems (CAMGIS), Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. He is working primarily in the fields of remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), complex modelling, machine learning and Artificial intelligence (AI) based algorithms and their application to natural hazards, natural resources and environmental problems. Many of his research outputs were put into practice. His research platform is mainly Asia and Australia, and he has been sharing his findings worldwide. He is also a permanent resident of Australia and Malaysia.

He is a professor in composite material at the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Sapuan is also currently the chief executive editor for all Pertanika journals.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chin Hoong Fong</span> Seed scientist

Chin Hoong Fong was a seed scientist who pioneered the storage of recalcitrant seeds in the 1970s. He was the Honorary Research Fellow of Bioversity International and Professor Emeritus at the Department of Crop Science at the Universiti Putra Malaysia. He served on the Board of Trustees of the International Board of Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR), now Bioversity International (1987-1992), the Advisory Committee on Seed Storage, and the Committee of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, and he chaired the Technical Committee on Seed Storage of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA).

Abu Bakar bin Salleh is a scientist in enzyme and microbial technology at Universiti Putra Malaysia. He is a professor at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He is one of the Members of the Committee for the Setting up of Malaysian Citation Centre.
