USAT Sicilien was the Danish motor vessel MS Sicilien built in 1938. After Germany occupied Denmark 9 April 1940 Danish ships were considered enemy ships by Britain and France and subject to seizure. Sicilien was one of forty that sought refuge in the neutral United States. On 30 March 1941 those ships were seized by the United States and requisitioned on 23 July 1941. The ship was then turned over to the United States Army for operation as a United States Army Transport.

As an Army transport the ship made a notable contribution to establishment of a system of weather stations, designated Crystal stations, in the Arctic starting in late September 1941. Sicilien and a fleet of small vessels established stations first proposed as bases on the Crimson air ferry route but first established as weather stations. In June 1942 the ship was transporting Army cargo and troops from Kingston, Jamaica to San Juan, Puerto Rico when torpedoed and sunk by U-172 with loss of 46 of the 77 persons aboard.

Construction

Sicilien, yard number 252, was constructed in 1938 by Helsingørs Jernskibs og Maskinbyggeri A/S, Elsinore, Denmark for Det Forenede Dampskibs Selskab (DFDS), Copenhagen, Denmark. The company had delivered two nearly identical ships for DFDS, Tunis (hull #231) and Marocco (hull #232), in 1936 that were nominally 100  DWT less in capacity than the later ships but with identical dimensions. [1] [2] [3] Algier (hull #251) and Sicilien were delivered in 1938. [4] [note 1]

Sicilien, signal OYWY, was a one deck vessel with a cruiser stern, 1,654  GRT, 910  NRT, 2,520  DWT 271.7 ft (82.8 m) registered length, 40.4 ft (12.3 m) beam and 16.6 ft (5.1 m) depth. Sicilien was powered by a single 5 cylinder, 338 n.h.p. diesel engine driving one screw for a speed of 13 kn (15 mph; 24 km/h). History

Sicilien was one of four similar cargo ships in commercial service for Det Forenede Dampskibs Selskab (DFDS), Copenhagen, operating between northwest Europe and the Mediterranean. [8] After war began in Europe Sicilien and the three other new ships Tunis, Marocco, Algier were put into Atlantic service. The change was due to a surge in freight to North and South America. [1] The ship arrived in New York on the day before Germany occupied Denmark on 9 April 1940. [9] Sicilien and a similar company ship, Tunis, were in New York when the United States government seized Danish ships on 30 March 1941. [8] [10]

There was no Danish government in exile, the government completely subject to German influence, and Danish ships were thus considered by Britain and France to be enemy ships subject to seizure. Danish ships not seized by the belligerents sought refuge in neutral ports, particularly the United States. In New York a Danish Shipping Committee, without government powers, attempted to negotiate an "understanding" with representatives of the British and French governments without success. Under German pressure the Danish government ordered the ships in neutral ports to remain there and their crews to refuse any service including a law in Denmark prohibiting crews in neutral ports to sign on with other ships. The shortage of ships and crews among the Allied belligerents and neutral United States led to the United States seizing Danish ships on 30 March 1941. Denmark officially protested the seizure as against international law and demanding immediate return to no avail. [10] [11]

Sicilien was one of forty Danish merchant vessels, totaling 142,641  GRT, seized by the United States Coast Guard and then requisitioned for use or transfer of title under the Ship Requisition Act. [note 2] Most of the Danish ships were delivered to the War Shipping Administration (WSA), registered in Panama for diplomatic reasons, and operated under new names by commercial companies as WSA agents. [12] [note 3] Sicilien was delivered to WSA in New York on 12 July 1941 and delivered under Executive Order by WSA to the Army under bareboat charter on 23 July for operation as an Army Transport. [5]

Sicilien was the main transport for establishment of an air ferry route that would allow shorter range aircraft to fly from Newfoundland to Scotland by way of Greenland and Iceland. Surveys made during June and July 1941 selected sites for the route, designated the Crimson Route, but winter would preclude any construction. Instead the Army established weather stations designated at Crystal I at Fort Chimo, Labrador, Crystal II at the upper end of Frobisher Bay and Crystal III off the northeast coast of Baffin Island on Paallavvik Island. Sicilien loaded a small detachment with arctic equipment, housing, fuel and weather and communications equipment for each of the CRYSTAL weather stations at the Boston Port of Embarkation and departed 21 September 1941. The sites were accessible only with smaller vessels and extreme caution was required due to poor charts, ice, snow and tides up to 42 ft (12.8 m). Sicilien made a stop at Halifax, Nova Scotia picking up five trawlers and three Norwegian vessels for the mission. Some of the ship's cargo was transferred to the smaller vessels at Halifax with a later transfer at Port Burwell, Nunavut near Crystal 1. [13]

Sicilien transiting unescorted from Kingston, Jamaica to San Juan, Puerto Rico with Army personnel was torpedoed and sunk on 7 June 1942 [note 4] by Germany's U-172 about 10 nautical miles (19 km) south of Cape Beata, Dominican Republic ( 17°30′N71°20′W / 17.500°N 71.333°W / 17.500; -71.333 ). The Lives lost included 27 of the ships complement, including the master, and 19 Army passengers. The 31 survivors made it to rafts, were questioned by Germans and made Barahona, Dominican Republic a few hours later. [5] [14] [6] [15]

In 1958 the United States offered Denmark $5,396,202 in settlement of claims for use and loss of all forty vessels including Sicilien. [16]

USS Uranus (AF-14) was a Uranus-class stores ship bareboat chartered to the U.S. Navy by the War Shipping Administration for use in World War II. The ship was one of the Danish vessels idled in U.S. ports seized by the United States after the occupation of Denmark by German forces. The ship was the Danish J. Lauritzen A/S line vessel Maria, ex Caravelle, ex Helga until chartered to the Navy and commissioned on 11 August 1941 under the name Uranus.

USS <i>Roamer</i> (AF-19) Danish motorship, seized by the U.S. navy during World War II

USS Roamer (AF-19) was the Danish refrigerated motorship African Reefer, completed 1935, of the J. Lauritzen shipping company which had put in at Madeira after Germany occupied Denmark. The ship later sailed to a U.S. port on assurances it would be treated equally with U.S. vessels chartered for war purposes. Instead it was seized by the United States Maritime Commission and placed in service under War Shipping Administration (WSA) allotment to commercial, Army transport and finally Navy use at half the rate paid for U.S. ships. The agreed to rate was not restored until 1958 after a Supreme Court judgement and Congressional action.

MS Tunis was a Danish motor ship in commercial service for Det Forenede Dampskibs Selskab (DFDS), Copenhagen, Denmark, as a cargo ship delivered to DFDS on 15 January 1936. Tunis was the first of four sister ships, two built in 1936 and two in 1938, that operated for DFDS. The ship's normal service was Copenhagen to the Mediterranean until war in Europe when all four of the ships were put into Atlantic service.

USAT <i>John L. Clem</i> Ship

John L. Clem was built as the cargo and passenger liner Santa Ana for W. R. Grace and Company for service in Grace Line's South American service but was requisitioned before completion by the United States Shipping Board (USSB) in 1918 due to World War I. The ship was chartered back to Grace after completion until turned over to the United States Navy to be briefly commissioned as the troop transport USS Santa Ana (ID-2869) from 11 February 1919 to 21 July 1919.

USAT Thomas H. Barry, formerly SS Oriente, was a Ward Line ocean liner that became a United States Army troopship in the Second World War. She was intended for transfer to the United States Navy and assigned the hull number AP-45, but was not transferred and remained with the Army.

USS <i>Majaba</i> (AG-43) Cargo ship of the United States Navy

USS Majaba (AG-43/IX-102) was the Design 1049 cargo ship Meriden built in 1919 by the Albina Engine & Machine Works, Portland, Oregon. All the ships were requisitioned by the United States Shipping Board (USSB) for World War I service. The ship was bought by the E. K. Wood Lumber Co., of San Francisco, California in 1923 and renamed El Capitan. The ship was chartered by the U.S. Navy through the War Shipping Administration (WSA) in April 1942 and commissioned as Majaba.

SS Haiti was a passenger and freight ship built for the Colombian Mail Steamship Company built at Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia and delivered 15 December 1932. The ship was renamed briefly Puerto Rico in 1938 and Monterey in 1939 to operate for the New York and Cuba Mail Steamship Company until requisitioned with transfer of title to the War Shipping Administration (WSA) on 25 September 1942. The ship was then allocated to the U.S. Army for operation under a bareboat agreement as USAT Monterey. In 1943 the ship was assigned to the command at Trinidad to supply bases in Brazil and Ascension Island. After layup in the reserve fleet the ship was sold to Turkey.

USAT <i>Cuba</i>

USAT Cuba was the passenger ship Cuba of the Peninsular & Occidental Steamship Company built by William Cramp & Sons Shipbuilding Company, Philadelphia in 1920 and placed into operation in 1921 for scheduled passenger and freight service between Tampa, Key West and Havana.

SS <i>Harry Luckenbach</i>

The SS Harry Luckenbach, built as a cargo ship ordered by the Luckenbach Steamship Company and built at Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in Chester, Pennsylvania in 1919. The as yet unnamed ship was requisitioned by the United States Shipping Board (USSB) before completion and converted to a troop transport. The USSB allocated the ship, which had been fitted out with temporary troop accommodation in its cargo spaces, to the Navy which commissioned the ship on 7 July 1919 as USS Sol Navis with the Identification number 4031A. The ship was decommissioned October 1919 after two trips to France.

MS <i>Torrens</i> (1939) Cargo motor ship

MS Torrens was a Norwegian cargo motor ship built in 1939 by Kockums Mek.Verksted AB., Malmö, Sweden, for Wilhelm Wilhelmsen, Tønsberg, Norway. In 1940, after the German invasion of Norway, the ship operated for the Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission (Nortraship) in London. Voyages in early 1940 involved U.S. Atlantic ports and the Philippines, China and Japan. SS <i>Arcata</i> Ship built in Portland, Oregon, United States

SS Arcata, was built in 1919 as the SS Glymont for the United States Shipping Board as a merchant ship by the Albina Engine & Machine Works in Portland, Oregon. The 2,722-ton cargo ship Glymont was operated by the Matson Navigation till 1923 in post World War I work. In 1923 she was sold to Cook C. W. of San Francisco. In 1925 she was sold to Nelson Charles Company of San Francisco. In 1937 she was sold to Hammond Lumber Company of Fairhaven, California. For World War II, in 1941, she was converted to a US Army Troopship, USAT Arcata. She took supplies and troops to Guam. On July 14, 1942, she was attacked by Japanese submarine I-7 and sank. She was operating as a coastal resupply in the Gulf of Alaska, south of the Aleutian Islands at, approximately 165 nautical miles southeast of Sand Point, when she sank. She was returning after taking supplies to Army troops fighting in the Aleutian Islands campaign.
