UTM-02 is a South Korean maglev train developed for the continuous research of magnetic levitation trains. The vehicle development was undertaken by the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials. It was used on the National Science Museum Maglev line.
In 1989, South Korea began developing a maglev train at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials as a national research and development project. Hyundai Rotem, a company participating in the development project, succeeded in developing a 30 km/h vehicle for the Expo '93 exhibition in Daejeon.
Afterwards, 43.5 billion won was invested in research and development to develop the pre-commercialization prototype UTM-01 in 1998 and UTM-02 in 2006. By developing UTM-02, the country secured the core technology for maglev trains. [1]
UTM-02 were managed by Hyundai Rotem until 2011, but after the contract expired, the National Science Museum took over management of the vehicles.
It was manufactured by Hyundai Rotem based on technology from the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials. [2]
It is the first maglev train to start commercial operation in South Korea. Like the Shinbundang Line and K-AGT, the driver's cabin is connected to the passenger compartment, allowing a full view. The levitation method is a superconducting suction type suitable for low-speed operation, and the average speed is 30 km/h. [1]
Transrapid is a German-developed high-speed monorail train using magnetic levitation. Planning for the system started in the late 1960s, with a test facility in Emsland, Germany inaugurated in 1983. In 1991, technical readiness for application was approved by the Deutsche Bundesbahn in cooperation with renowned universities.

The K1, also known as Type 88 by American engineers, is a South Korean main battle tank designed by Chrysler Defense and Hyundai Precision Industry for the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. The vehicle's design was based on technology from Chrysler's M1 Abrams, tailored to meet the ROK's unique requirements. HSR-350x, alternatively called G7, KHST or NG-KTX, is a South Korean experimental high-speed train. It was developed and built in a joint project of government research institutes, universities and private companies that started in 1996, which aimed to reduce import dependence in high-speed rail technology. New components developed for the HSR-350x included motors, electronics, and the carbody of passenger cars. Test runs were conducted between 2002 and 2008. The experimental train achieved the South Korean rail speed record of 352.4 km/h (219.0 mph) in 2004. The HSR-350x was the basis for Korail's KTX-II (KTX-Sancheon) commercial high-speed trains.
The KTX-Sancheon is a South Korean high-speed train built by Hyundai Rotem in the second half of the 2000s and operated by Korail since March 2010. The National Maglev Initiative (NMI) was a research program undertaken in the early 1990s by the United States Department of Transportation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Energy, and other agencies which studied magnetically levitated, or "maglev", train technology, operating at speeds around 300 miles per hour (480 km/h). The effort was created in April 1990 and released a report in 1993. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) authorized $725 million in funds for maglev research, pending the results of the NMI study, but an appropriation of funds was also required, and it's not clear if that ever occurred.
HEMU-430X is a South Korean high-speed train intended for a maximum speed of 430 km/h (267 mph). On 31 March 2013, it achieved 421.4 km/h (261.8 mph) in a test run, making South Korea the world's fourth country after France, Japan and China to develop a high-speed train running above 420 km/h (261 mph). The main new feature of the train compared to older South Korean high-speed trains is distributed traction. The commercial versions of the trains, tentatively named the EMU-260 and EMU-320, were delivered to Korail from 2020 to 2021.
The Incheon Airport Maglev was a maglev line in South Korea that opened on 3 February 2016 and closed on 1 September 2023. It was the world's second commercially operating unmanned urban maglev line after Japan's Linimo. The trains were lighter, cutting construction costs in half. The majority of construction was completed by November 2012.

It was the first maglev train line to begin commercial operation in the country.
