Transportation in South Korea is provided by extensive networks of railways,highways,bus routes,ferry services and air routes that traverse the country. South Korea is the third country in the world to operate a maglev train,which is an automatically run people mover at Incheon International Airport.
Incheon,formerly Jemulpo or Chemulp'o (제물포) until the period after 1910,officially the Incheon Metropolitan City,is a city located in northwestern South Korea,bordering Seoul and Gyeonggi to the east. Inhabited since the Neolithic,Incheon was home to just 4,700 people when it became an international port in 1883. Today,about 3 million people live in the city,making it South Korea's third-most-populous city after Seoul and Busan.

Transrapid is a German-developed high-speed monorail train using magnetic levitation. Planning for the Transrapid system started in 1969 with a test facility for the system in Emsland,Germany completed in 1987. In 1991,technical readiness for application was approved by the Deutsche Bundesbahn in cooperation with renowned universities.
The Chuo Shinkansen is a Japanese maglev line under construction between Tokyo and Nagoya,with plans for extension to Osaka. Its initial section is between Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and Nagoya Station in Nagoya,with stations in Sagamihara,Kōfu,Iida and Nakatsugawa. Following the completion of the Tokyo-Nagoya line,the line will extend to connect stations in Mie,Nara and Osaka. The line is expected to connect Tokyo and Nagoya in 40 minutes,and eventually Tokyo and Osaka in 67 minutes,running at a maximum speed of 505 km/h (314 mph). About 90% of the 286-kilometer (178 mi) line to Nagoya will be tunnels.
Maglev is a system of train transportation that is levitated along a guideway through the use of magnetic forces. By levitating,maglev trains remove the rail-to-wheel contact present in conventional railways,eliminating rolling resistance.
Seoul Station (Korean: 서울역) is a major railway station in Seoul,the capital of South Korea. The station is served by the Korail Intercity Lines and the commuter trains of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway.
The Shanghai maglev train (SMT) or Shanghai Transrapid is a magnetic levitation train (maglev) line that operates in Shanghai,China. The line uses the German Transrapid technology. The Shanghai maglev is the world's first commercial high-speed maglev and has a maximum cruising speed of 300 km/h (186 mph). Prior to May 2021 the cruising speed was 431 km/h (268 mph),at the time this made it the fastest train service in commercial operation.
Seoul Subway Line 9,operated by Seoul Line9 Operation,is a subway line in Seoul,part of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. The line runs east from Gaehwa station or Gimpo International Airport station along the south bank of the Han River towards VHS Medical Center in Gangdong. In 2019,Line 9 had an annual ridership of 225 million or about 616,000 people per day.
Linimo,formally the Aichi Rapid Transit Tobu Kyuryo Line is a magnetic levitation train line in Aichi Prefecture,Japan,near the city of Nagoya. While primarily built to serve the Expo 2005 fair site,the line has since operated to serve the local community.
AREX is a South Korean airport rail link and commuter rail line that links Incheon International Airport with Seoul Station via Gimpo International Airport. The section between the two airports opened on March 23,2007,and line was extended to Seoul Station on December 29,2010. Long-distance Korea Train Express high speed trains started to use the line from June 30,2014,but discontinued service in March 2018 due to low ridership.
Yeongjong Island is an island off the west coast of the city of Incheon,South Korea,which contains Incheon International Airport as well as small villages,farms,and beaches. The previously separate Yongyu,Sammok,and Sinbul Islands have been joined to Yeongjong Island by an area of reclaimed land built for the construction of the airport. The island is an exclave of Incheon Metropolitan City's Jung-gu district,and is accessed via two bridges,Yeongjong Bridge connecting to Seo-gu and Incheon Bridge connecting to Songdo.
The Baltimore–Washington Superconducting Maglev Project (SCMAGLEV) is a proposed project connecting the United States cities of Baltimore,Maryland,and Washington,D.C.,with a 40 mi (64 km) maglev train system between their respective central business districts. It is the first segment of the planned Washington-New York Northeast Maglev project. The maglev proposal is not related to the Baltimore–Washington hyperloop proposed by the Boring Company.
Seoul,the capital and largest city in South Korea,accounts for only 0.6% of the country's total land area,yet it is home to around 19% of the population. The population density in Seoul demands a great deal of the city's transportation systems,which are regarded by many as among the best and most advanced in the world. Seoul is very well connected by its subway and bus systems,and the city is also very supportive of pedestrian foot travel. In 2006 it won the Sustainable Transport Award.
Incheon Station is the western terminus railway station of the Suin–Bundang and Gyeongin lines of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. The station is in the Bukseong neighborhood of the Jung District in Incheon,South Korea and is approximately 20 kilometers west of Seoul. Established in 1899 under the Korean Empire as Chemulpo Station,Incheon Station is the oldest train station in the Seoul Capital Area. During the Japanese occupation of Korea,the station was briefly named Hainchon Station and the original station building was destroyed during the Korean War. Service for the old Suin Line began in 1937 and ended in 1995;the new Suin Line was extended to the station in 2016. Service for the Gyeongin Line began in 1974.
The Gyeongbu high-speed railway,also known as Gyeongbu HSR,is South Korea's first high-speed rail line from Seoul to Busan. KTX high-speed trains operate three sections of the line:on 1 April 2004,the first between a junction near Geumcheon-gu Office station,Seoul and a junction at Daejeonjochajang station north of Daejeon,and a second between a junction at Okcheon station,southeast of Daejeon,and a junction near Jicheon station,north of Daegu entered service;then on 1 November 2010,the third section,between a junction west of Daegu and Busan became operational. The missing gaps across the urban areas of Daejeon and Daegu were in construction for an expected opening in 2014,separate tracks into Seoul Station were also planned. The temporary ends of the three sections were connected to the parallel conventional Gyeongbu Line by tracks that will serve as interconnector branches upon the completion of the entire line. On 1 August 2015,construction on urban areas of Daejeon and Daegu were completed;all the sections of HSR line were connected.
Incheon International Airport Terminal 1 station is a railway station on AREX and the Incheon Airport Maglev. It is in Incheon International Airport's transport center near Terminal 1.
Incheon Transit Corporation (인천교통공사),formerly known as Incheon Rapid Transit Corporation (인천지하철공사) currently operates the Incheon Subway,Wolmi Sea Train,Incheon Bus information,Incheon Bus Terminal,Call taxi for the handicapped in Incheon,South Korea,established in 1993. In 2011 Incheon Transit Corporation merged with ′Incheon Metro′,established in 1998 to operate Incheon Subway Line 1,Incheon Subway Line 2,the section of Seoul Subway Line 7 between Kkachiul &Seongnam,&the Incheon Airport Maglev. In the future it also has plans to operate Line 3.
The Ara Canal or Gyeongin Ara Waterway is a canal in South Korea linking the Han River to the Yellow Sea,bypassing the Korean Demilitarized Zone that the river's estuary lies in. It extends from the Seo-gu district in Incheon to the Gangseo-gu district in Seoul. The canal was built to control flooding,improve shipping logistics,and provide recreational opportunities.
The Changsha Maglev Express is a medium-low speed magnetic levitation,or maglev line in Changsha,China. This is China's second maglev line,after Shanghai Maglev,and the first domestically built maglev line,which uses indigenous technology. The line stretches over 18.55 kilometers (11.53 mi) and runs between Changsha Huanghua International Airport,Langli station and the high-speed railway station Changsha South railway station.
