The Seoul Metropolitan Subway is a metropolitan railway system consisting of 23 rapid transit, light metro, commuter rail and people mover lines located in northwest South Korea. The system serves most of the Seoul Metropolitan Area including the Incheon metropolis and satellite cities in Gyeonggi province. Some regional lines in the network stretch out beyond the Seoul Metropolitan Area to rural areas in northern Chungnam province and western Gangwon province, that lie over 100 km (62 mi) away from the capital.
Rapid transit systems operate in six major South Korean cities, except for Ulsan and Sejong.
Seoul Subway Line 5 of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway, dubbed the purple line, is a long line crossing from west to the east across the Seoul National Capital Area, South Korea. It is one of two subway lines in Seoul to cross under the Han River, which is done at two points. The main line runs through to Hanam Geomdansan Station while the branch line from Gangdong Station terminates at Macheon Station. In 2019, Line 5 carried an annual ridership of 334 million or about 915,000 passengers per day.
Seoul Subway Line 2, also known as the Circle Line, is a circular line of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. The line running clockwise is called the "inner circle line" and the counter-clockwise line is called the "outer circle line". This is Seoul's most heavily used line, and consists of the main loop, the Seongsu Branch and the Sinjeong Branch for a total line length of 60.2 km (37.4 mi). The Line 2 loop is the third longest subway loop in the world after Moscow Metro Bolshaya Koltsevaya line and Beijing Subway Line 10. In 2019, Line 2 had an annual ridership of 812 million passengers or 2.2 million passengers per day.
Seoul Subway Line 6 is a line of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. The route connects Eunpyeong-gu and Jungnang-gu in a U-shaped manner, running through Yongsan-gu and Seongbuk-gu. It does not cross the Han River. It is mainly used to connect to the northern outskirts of Seoul and to relieve the traffic on other lines.
Seoul Subway Line 9, operated by Seoul Line9 Operation, is a subway line in Seoul, part of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. The line runs east from Gaehwa station or Gimpo International Airport station along the south bank of the Han River towards VHS Medical Center in Gangdong. In 2019, Line 9 has an annual ridership of 225 million or about 616,000 people per day.
The Shinbundang Line Korean: 신분당선; Hanja: 新盆唐線; literally, New Bundang Line) or DX Line for Dynamic Express Line is a 33.4 km (20.8 mi) long line of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. It is the world's fifth subway to run completely driverless and the second completely driverless metro line to open in South Korea, after Busan Subway Line 4. It connects Sinsa station and Gwanggyo station in 42 minutes, a feat achieved by being the first line to operate South Korea's next-generation subway car travelling at over 90 km/h (56 mph), with the fastest average speed of any subway line in the country.
Konkuk University Station is a rapid transit station on Seoul Subway Line 2 and Seoul Subway Line 7. It is located in Hwayang-dong in the Gwangjin-gu administrative district of Seoul. It is adjacent to Konkuk University from which it takes its name. Line 2 is serviced by an elevated platform while Line 7 is serviced by an underground platform. The station has connections to ten bus lines through its six exits as well as a connection to the airport shuttle bus. The station services Hwayang-dong as well as Jayang-dong and Noyu-dong. The area around the station is mixed residential and small commercial businesses. Exits from the underground Line 7 platform open into Konkuk University and the adjacent Star City shopping and high-rise residential tower complex.
Sungshin Women's University Station is a station on the Line 4 of the Seoul Subway and Ui LRT. As its name indicates, it serves the nearby Sungshin Women's University.
Seongsu Station is a rapid transit station on Seoul Subway Line 2. It is located in Seongsu-dong in the Seongdong-gu administrative district of Seoul. It is also the southeastern terminus of Line 2's Seongsu Branch to Sinseol-dong. Trains needing to be serviced take the Seongsu Branch from this station and go to the Gunja Train Depot behind Yongdap Station.
Sinseol-dong Station is a station on the Seoul Subway Line 1, the Seongsu Branch of Seoul Subway Line 2, and Ui LRT. There is a piece of track that connects the Line 1 and Line 2 stations, and Line 1 trains belonging to Seoul Metro are serviced at the Gunja Train Depot behind Yongdap Station using this connective track.
The Ui LRT, referred to as the Ui-Sinseol LRT or Ui-Sinseol Line (우이신설선) in Korean, is a light metro which is part of Seoul Metropolitan Subway. It is a fully underground 11.4 km (7.1 mi) Light Rapid Transit line from Ui-dong to Sinseol-dong in northern Seoul which opened on September 2, 2017. The line, which is expected to carry 110,000 passengers a day, has 13 stations. It connects to Line 4 at Sungshin Women's University, Line 6 at Bomun and Lines 1 & 2 at Sinseol-dong. The last (northernmost) station is in Ui-dong, hence the name of the line. In 2019, the line carried 27 million passengers or about 75,000 people per day.
Bundang is a planned community in the Bundang-gu district of Seongnam, South Korea. It was developed to encourage affordable housing and urban decentralization. The community has a sports complex, a park and a youth center.
The Sillim Line is a light metro which is part of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. It opened on May 28, 2022.
Bukhansan Ui Station is a station on the Ui LRT located in Ui-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. It opened on the 2 September 2017. The tracks continue through the station to the Train Depot. The station is located next to the Ui LRT Control centre.
Gaori station is a station on the Ui LRT located in Suyu-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It opened on 2 September 2017.
Station numbering is a sign system which assigns station codes consisting of a few letters and numbers to train stations. It aims to facilitate navigation for foreign travelers not familiar with the local language by using globally understood characters. The system is now in use by various railway companies around the world such as in Mainland China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States.
The Dongbuk Line is a future subway line scheduled to open in June 2025, in Seoul, South Korea. Construction began in October 2019.
The Mok-dong Line is a future subway line scheduled to open in 2028, in Seoul, South Korea. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021.
Gwanaksan Station (관악산역) is a subway station on the Sillim Line in Gwanak-gu, Seoul. It will be a transfer station with the Seoul Light Rail West Line in the future. From this station to Saetgang Station, all stations are underground. There are two late-night trains that stay at the station overnight.
