The Navi Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit system in the city of Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The planning and construction of the Navi Mumbai Metro was overseen by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). [3] The system is planned to consist of five rail lines covering a total distance of 106.4 kilometres (66.1 mi), out of which one is operational and the other four are being planned. [4] The foundation stone for the project was laid on 1 May 2011, with a target completion date of 2014. [5] After over 9 years of delays, due to slowdowns in construction caused by lack of labour and adequate funding, along with land acquisition issues, [5] the Line-1 of the metro commenced operations on 17 November 2023. [6] [1]
The Navi Mumbai Metro projects received formal approval on 29 April 2010, and a public hearing on 21 May 2010 reported no major objections to the plan. [7] CIDCO was named as the implementing agency of the Belapur–Pendhar–Kalamboli–Khandeshwar line, under the Indian Tramway Act 1886, by the Government of Maharashtra on 30 September 2010. [4] [8] The metro's foundation stone was laid on 1 May 2011 by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, and general foundation work on the system's first phase commenced in October 2011. [9] In March 2012, CIDCO released the metro's complete master plan, including a proposed connection to the Mumbai Metro. [8] In February 2017, RITES submitted an interim detailed project report (DPR) for Lines II, III and IV of the Navi Mumbai Metro. [10]
In February 2013, thousands of villagers in the Navi Mumbai area protested against CIDCO's inaction on local housing developments and its failure to provide restitution for locals affected by infrastructure projects. The protesters pledged to "shut down the CIDCO head office and all development projects in the region. These will include the metro project and any progress on the airport project". [11]
The Navi Mumbai Metro is planned to consist of five lines, totaling 106.4 kilometres (66.1 mi) in length. [4] As of 2017 [update] , Line 1 of the metro was slated to commence operations in November 2023, which it ultimately did on the 17th of that month. [12]
All the phases of Line 1 will be constructed and funded by CIDCO. Lines 2 and 3 will be funded by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority respectively. The total cost of Line 1 is estimated to be ₹4,068 crore (US$510 million). [4]
The 23.40-kilometre (14.54 mi) Line 1 consists of 20 stations. The proposed route will link CBD Belapur, Kharghar, Taloja, Taloja MIDC, Kalamboli, Kamothe and the Khandeshwar railway station, terminating at the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport. [7]
In mid-2012, CIDCO awarded the ₹321 crore (US$40 million) contract for the construction of the 11.1 km (6.9 mi) section from Belapur to Pendhar to a consortium of Sanjose (Spain), Mahavira Road and Infrastructure (Navi Mumbai), and Supreme Infrastructure (Mumbai). The original deadline to complete the project was in 2016. This was later extended to mid-2017, and then mid-2018. By January 2017, only 60% of the work on the stations had been completed. Finding the progress of work to be unsatisfactory, CIDCO sent a notice terminating the contract to the consortium on 11 January 2017. [13] On 1 March 2017, CIDCO floated new tenders to construct 11 stations along the Belapur-Pendhar section. The previous contractors had completed 60% of the work on the stations. The new contract with worth ₹141 crore (US$18 million). [14]

An international consortium of companies including Ansaldo STS, Tata Projects and CSR Zhuzhou will provide the electrical and mechanical systems for the first phase of Line 1. Ansaldo will conduct systems integration and supply train control systems, telecoms, fare collection systems and equipment storage. [15] The metro's standard gauge network would be electrified at 25 kV AC, with power provided via an overhead catenary. [15]
In 2014, the Chinese company CSR Zhuzhou signed a contract with CIDCO to supply rolling stock for the first phase of the metro's Line 1. [15] The three-car trainsets are 64.6 metres (212 ft) long and 3.1 metres (10 ft 2 in) wide, with a passenger capacity of around 1,100 and a maximum speed of 90 km/h (56 mph). [16] The trains feature stainless steel bodies, air-conditioning and LED lighting. [16] [15]

Kharghar is a node of Raigad District's Navi Mumbai and it is a suburb under Panvel Municipal Corporation. It is situated at the northernmost tip of Raigad district. It was developed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).
The Dronagiri is a node of Navi Mumbai in Raigad district. It is located at the Southern tip of Navi Mumbai metropolis and spread over 1,250 hectares of land. The zone is located to the east of Uran town in Navi Mumbai, and is bound by the Karanja River on the south-east. Residential areas are located to the west and north-west of the zone, while the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) area and township are located towards the north of the zone. The zone is adjacent to the JNPT port, and is located farthest from the central business districts of Belapur, Nerul and Vashi. Due to its proximity to the port, this zone is ideal for port-based industries.
Taloja is a census town in Raigad district of Navi Mumbai city in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is an extension of the Kharghar node and governed by Panvel Municipal Corporation. Taloja has Navi Mumbai Metro Phase I starting origin point at Pendhar. Taloja is divided into two phases as Phase I and Phase II by CIDCO. CIDCO has developed mass housing project in Taloja Phase II and development work is in progress. Taloja is connected to other parts of Navi Mumbai through Indian Railways, Navi Mumbai Metro & NMMT buses. Taloja is going to be connected soon by the new international airport, Navi Mumbai International Airport(NMIA).
Navi Mumbai International Airport, officially named as D. B. Patil International Airport, is an international airport being constructed in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, Raigad district, Maharashtra, India. When completed, it will become the second airport of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, serving alongside Mumbai's existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
Kalamboli is one of the nodes of Navi Mumbai in Raigad District. It is a transportation hub, being situated at the junction of the Sion-Panvel Highway, NH 48, Panvel By-Pass, NH 66 and Mumbai-Pune Expressway and is among the biggest iron and steel delivery centers in India. The township, like the rest of Navi Mumbai, is divided into sectors, which are further divided into plots. The residential and commercial areas of Kalamboli are divided by the NH 4 highway. Roadpali, a region to the north of Kalamboli, is developing at a faster rate than the latter with many residential projects coming up due to availability of land. Roadpali is located along the Taloja Link Road. Kalamboli also houses the Navi Mumbai Police Headquarters. CIDCO is the nodal administrative body for Kalamboli node. Kalamboli also has a Sewage Water Treatment Plant owned by CIDCO. Kalamboli is now governed by Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC). The terminal of Mumbai-Pune Expressway is at Kalamboli. It also has Navi Mumbai's largest marble market alongside the Sion Panvel Highway.
Kamothe is a node of Navi Mumbai in Raigad District which is developed and maintained by CIDCO. Kamothe is located on the Sion Panvel Highway. It is the third node after Panvel and Kalamboli towards Mumbai.
The Central Business District of Belapur is an upmarket node of Navi Mumbai. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation is headquartered in Belapur. The Reserve Bank of India maintains a branch office at CBD Belapur. This area is one of the fastest developing regions in Navi Mumbai in terms of new residential and commercial construction projects. CBD Belapur is connected to other parts of Mumbai through railways, BEST & NMMT buses. It had a ferry service for traveling to Elephanta caves from Sector-11.
The Sion Panvel Expressway is a 25 km Indian highway located entirely in the state of Maharashtra, that connects Sion in Mumbai with Panvel, via Navi Mumbai. It is one of the busiest and most important roads in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and connects Mumbai with the city of Pune. The National Highway 4 and Mumbai-Pune Expressway begin at the eastern end of the expressway, at Kalamboli junction, near Panvel. The highway is also used by vehicles traveling towards Mumbai from Konkan and Goa.
Utsav Chowk is one of the famous landmarks of Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Kharghar is one of the towns in Raigad district of Navi Mumbai area. It is a well planned town and Utsav Chowk is a prominent landmark just between Sector-4, Sector-7 and Sector-5 of Kharghar town.
Nagpur Metro is a rapid transit system for the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. Phase I of the metro project cost was estimated to cost ₹8,650 crore but the final project cost incurred was ₹9,279 crore (US$1.2 billion). In February 2014, the Government of Maharashtra gave approval for the Metro project, while the Government of India's Ministry of Urban Development had given "In Principle" approval for the project. On 20 August 2014, Union Cabinet gave approval for the development of the project, and the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone on 21 August. Construction began on 31 May 2015, with trial run beginning on 30 September 2017.
Navade Road is a railway station on the Vasai Road–Diva–Panvel–Roha route of the Central Line, of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. Navade node is a small node developed by CIDCO with single point access to the node. It is like a small township with 165 plots and approx 80-90 buildings. It's a part of Navi Mumbai city. Construction in this area is in developing stage and good properties are available. It has got good transportation facility from Panvel via six seater rickshaw and 73 numbered route of NMMT bus, KDMT bus nos. 20 & 70, and from CBD Belapur, NMMT bus nos. 71 and 72. There is also an auto rickshaw stand in Navade. It has close proximity to Kharghar node of CIDCO with Navade village falling in Kharghar sec 45. Also close proximity to Kalamboli. D Mart is 1 km from Navade node and Reliance Smart 0.5 km. Navi Mumbai Metro line 1 phase 2 will be passing through Navade road and shall have interconnection with Navade railway station. Panvel–Virar local train which is approved from the government and the work is expected to start soon. There are many prominent buildings like Devdrishti, Dev Aashirwad, Neelkamal, Keshav Garden, Laxmi Kalash CHS etc. Navade colony is on NH4 highway and connects to Sion Panvel Expressway via Taloja link road. Usually there is heavy traffic of trailers and trucks due to JNPT, oil refineries as well as, nearby MIDC area, but once the NH4 road widening and flyover is completed and proposed service roads are constructed, much lighter traffic is expected. There is also smell problem from nearby Taloja MIDC for which Navade and Kharghar/Kalamboli residents are fighting. Nearby Kasadi river is passing through Navade node but this river has contaminated water and the aqua life is totally dead due to careless attitude of the factories in Taloja MIDC. Recently CIDCO had started to construct a holding pond in Navade near Devdrishti apartment but left it half done after some works. The internal roads have been in too poor state waiting for the awarded contractor to start construction work. CIDCO has developed a beautiful garden with children play area with slides and other equipments. Although small, this garden is having a jogging track, benches and lush green lawn. Unlike other CIDCO nodes. There is an indoor playzone and family entertainment zone named "Happy Town." recently open in Navade where families can spend their time instead of going far for malls. There are plots reserved for Police station, market, temple and post office but is not at all developed from CIDCO. Every Thursday and Saturday there is market which sells vegetables, household items, clothes, bags, shoes etc. Almost all types of shops are opened in Navade node and it is self contained with very less dependency of travelling to other nodes. Also there is one 6 bed full-fledged hospital Anand Hospital in Navade apart from various clinics. Heavy vehicles and trailers are parked illegally at the internal roadside for which government should take action to avoid inconvenience to Navade residences.
Panvel railway station, station code is: PL(suburban)/PNVL(mainline)) is a railway station on the Harbour Line and Central line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network.
CBD Belapur is a railway station on the Harbour Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. It serves the Central Business District of Navi Mumbai. Around 50,000 people travel towards CST and 15,000 travel towards Panvel every day. Navi Mumbai Metro starts from Belapur terminal metro station which is built adjacent to the railway station.
Line 1 of the Navi Mumbai Metro is part of the rapid transit rail system for the city of Navi Mumbai, India. When fully completed, the 23.40 km fully-elevated line will consist of 20 metro stations from Belapur to Khandeshwar.
Line 2 (Yellow Line) of the Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit metro line in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The line connects Dahisar in the northwest with Mandale in Mankhurd via Andheri, BKC and Chembur in the east. Phase One of Line 2A was partially opened on 2 April 2022 from Dahisar East to Dahanukarwadi.
The Nerul–Uran line or Port Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway is a railway line serving between CBD Belapur and Nerul in Navi Mumbai with Uran in Navi Mumbai of India, which is attached to the Harbour line. It was inaugurated on 11 November 2018. Daily services started on 12 November 2018.
