Chandigarh Metro is an approved rapid transit system to serve the Chandigarh Capital Region, which includes Chandigarh and adjacent areas in Punjab and Haryana states of India. In Phase-1, to be progressively built and operationalised between 2027 and 2034, 3 lines will connect tri-cities of Chandigarh, Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana. Phase-2, to be constructed after 2034, will connect Pinjore in Haryana and further expand the network in Mohali with 2 more lines. [1] [4] [5] [6] The project, which was initially scrapped in 2017 due to low financial viability, [7] was approved in March 2023 and received formal clearance in July 2023 from the governments of Punjab and Haryana after a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was created. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the agency operating and looking after Delhi Metro, submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Chandigarh Metro Project to the former Governor of Punjab and administrator of Chandigarh, Shivraj Patil, on 16 August 2012. [9]
On 9 July 2015, in the presence of Kaptan Singh Solanki, the then the Governor of Punjab and administrator of Chandigarh, as well as the Governor of Haryana, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the Additional Chief Secretary and the secretary of Haryana Town and Country Planning Department, P. Raghavendra Rao, the Secretary of Town and Planning, Punjab, A. Venu Prasad, and the Adviser of the Union Territory (UT), Vijay Kumar Dev. [10] As part of the MoU, the three parties also created a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to execute the project as the Greater Chandigarh Transport Corporation (GCTC) for the development of comprehensive integrated multi-modal urban and suburban commuter system for the region. The initial equity of the GCTC shall be ₹ 100 crore, which would be contributed equally – 25 percent each – by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the UT Administration, Haryana and Punjab. [11]
The project was scrapped in 2017 due to low viability, and stated that the rapid transit system in the tri-city would not be viable at least until 2051. [7] However, the project was revived in November 2022 when Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) decided to re-plan the project and make it a reality in the forthcoming years, as the tri-city is having a combined population of around 3 million and is long facing traffic and frequent congestion, resulting in the increase in the number of accidents and other mishaps over time. It proposed to build a 64.5 km network connecting the three cities. [12] In view of this, in March 2023, the project was given an in-principle approval by the Government of India. [8] In July 2023, in a meeting of the governments of Punjab and Haryana and RITES, the project was cleared by the governments to progress after the detailed plan was created by RITES. [1]
The plan includes to divide the project into two phases, out of which the first phase will be constructed between 2027 and 2037 (later replanned to 2034) and will consist of three lines connecting three cities, while the second phase will consist of another two lines and will be constructed after 2034. The first phase will be built at a cost of ₹ 10,570 crore. [1] [2]
In the first phase, the first of the three lines will connect various areas within Chandigarh, and the other two lines will connect the tri-cities with each other. The network will be 91 km (57 mi) long, which increased the previous plan of 77 km (48 mi) by more than 24 km. Out of the 77-km network, Chandigarh will have 35 km, Panchkula will have 11 km, and Mohali and New Chandigarh together will have 31 km of network. It will be progressively built and operationalised between 2027 and 2034 at a cost of ₹ 10,570 crore, to be funded by the governments of Punjab and Haryana (20 percent), the Government of India (20 percent) and the remaining 60 percent by a lending agency to be selected. Its Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be created by RITES, at a cost of ₹ 6.5 crore. [1] [2]
Line 1 will be 34 km (21 mi) long. It will connect ISBT Panchkula to Panchkula Extension, wherein the localities of Sultanpur (New Chandigarh), Kurali, Sarangpur, Khuda Lahora, PGI, Panjab University, Transport Light, Sector 26, Chandigarh railway station, Mauli Jagran Road, Housing Board Chowk, Geeta Chowk (Panchkula), ISBT Panchkula, Maheshpur road, Amartex road, Sector 20 Panchkula and Panchkula Extension Sector 28 (Madanpur) will have stations. Line 2 will be 41 km (25 mi) long. It will connect Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake to ISBT Zirakpur via Industrial Area and Chandigarh Airport, wherein the localities of Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, Sector 17 Chandigarh, ISBT Sector 43, Fountain Chowk, Himalaya Marg, Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan (Mohali), Jail Road Chowk, Airport Chowk and Aerocity NH-7 Junction and ISBT Zirakpur. The route will join the ISBTs of Mohali and Zirakpur together, which are major transport hubs in the tri-city. [1]
Line 3 will be 13 km (8.1 mi) long. It will connect Grain Market Chowk, Sector 39 Chandigarh to Transport Chowk, Sector 26 Chandigarh, wherein the localities of Vikas Marg and Tribune Chowk will have stations in between the route. [1]
The second phase of the project will consist of two more lines, taking the total number of lines to five. The network will be 25 km (16 mi) long, thereby increasing the total network length to 109 km (68 mi). It will be constructed after 2037. [1]
Line 1 will be 5 km (3.1 mi) long. It will connect Airport Chowk to Manakpul Kallar. [1]
Line 2 will be 20 km (12 mi) long. It will connect ISBT Zirakpur to Pinjore. [1]
The project is expected to cost ₹113.75 billion (US$1.4 billion), out of which ₹89.95 billion (US$1.1 billion) will be borne by Chandigarh Administration, ₹16.8 billion (US$210 million) will be borne by Punjab Govt. and the remaining ₹7 billion (US$88 million) by Haryana Govt. The expected cost of the metro elevated section is ₹1.4 billion (US$18 million) per Km and that of the metro underground section is ₹3.5 billion (US$44 million) per Km. The metro will be completed in two phases. The estimated cost of Phase-I is ₹89.95 billion (US$1.1 billion) and that of Phase-II is ₹23.8 billion (US$300 million). [13] The revised cost of the first phase of the project is ₹ 10,570 crore. [1]

Panchkula is a planned city and district headquarter in the Panchkula district in Haryana, India. It is a satellite town of the state capital Chandigarh. Panchkula is a border city with Punjab,Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh. The origin of the name Panchkula came from the place where five irrigation canals meet. At present, it forms a part of an adjoining area to Chandigarh, Mohali, and Zirakpur. It is approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) southeast of Chandigarh, 105 km (65 mi) southwest of Shimla, 44 km (27 mi) from Ambala and 259 km (161 mi) northeast of New Delhi, the national capital. It is a part of the Chandigarh capital region or Greater Chandigarh. The Chandigarh-Mohali-Panchkula metropolitan region collectively forms a Chandigarh Tricity, with a combined population of over two million.
Mohali district, officially known as Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district or SAS Nagar district, is one of the twenty three districts of Punjab, a state in north-west India. It was formed in April 2006 and is 18th district of Punjab, created next to Pathankot district. This district was carved out of areas falling in Ropar and Patiala District. It is situated next to the union territory of Chandigarh, Ambala And Panchkula district of Haryana.

Zirakpur is a satellite town, in Mohali District, Punjab, neighboring Mohali, Chandigarh in India. It is set on the foothills of Shivalik hills. It is part of the tehsil Dera Bassi. It is the gateway to Chandigarh from Delhi. It comprises mainly the following areas near Chandigarh Airport including VIP Road, Dhakoli, Lohgarh, Bhabat, Bishanpura, Kishanpura, Nabha, Gazipur, Baltana, Singhpura, Peer Muchalla and Dyalpura. This town is situated on the junction of national highways Himalayan Expressway, National Highway 5 (India) towards Shimla, Ambala Chandigarh Expressway towards Ambala and National Highway 7 (India) towards Patiala.
Chandimandir Cantonment is a military cantonment of the Indian Army located in Panchkula district at the foot of the Sivalik Hills adjoining Panchkula city in Haryana. It is the headquarters of the Western Command of the Indian Army.
Chandigarh Capital Region (CCR) or Chandigarh Metropolitan Region (CMR) is an area, which includes the union territory city of Chandigarh, and its neighboring cities of Mohali, Kharar, Zirakpur, New Chandigarh (in Punjab) and Panchkula, Pinjore, Kalka, Barwala (in Haryana). Chandigarh Administration, Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) are different authorities responsible for development of this region. Baddi, an industrial town in nearby Himachal Pradesh, is also adjacent.
Rampur Sainian is a village situated in the north east of Dera Bassi in the Mohali district of Indian state of Punjab. It is on Dera Bassi-Barwala link road 6 km away from Dera Bassi. It is on the Punjab-Haryana border and is about 267 km (166 mi) from the national capital New Delhi. It is just 26 km (16 mi) away from both Chandigarh and Panchkula. In this age of industrialization, this village is also not untouched. A lot of industries can be noticed on Dera Bassi-Barwala link road to Rampur Sanian.
Peer Muchalla is a town in Municipal Council Zirakpur in district Mohali in state of Punjab in India. It adjoins Sector 20 of Panchkula. Proximity to Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Airport is attracting property builders to this area. It is coming up as a posh area and developed suburb of Zirakpur and Panchkula with many multi-storey residential complexes.

The Delhi Metro is a mass rapid transit system which serves Delhi and its adjoining satellite cities, such as Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurugram, Noida and Bahadurgarh, in the National Capital Region of India. The system consists of 10 colour-coded lines serving 256 stations, with a total length of 350.42 kilometres (217.74 mi). Chandigarh Administration, Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) are different authorities responsible for the development of this region.
Patna Metro (Patna MRTS) is a rapid transit system being constructed in the city of Patna, India. Construction will be completed over five phases, and the transit system would be owned and operated by the state-run Patna Metro Rail Corporation. In the first phase, five stations of Patna Metro will be operational by March 2025. Patna MRTS, constructed under a public-private partnership model, is estimated to cost ₹133,657.7 million (US$1.7 billion). This cost excludes land acquisition cost, which will be paid for by the Bihar government. The first phase (consisting of the east–west and north–south corridors) will include both a 15.36 km (9.54 mi) elevated track and a 16.30 km (10.13 mi) underground track.

The Himalayan Expressway is a 27.5 km stretch of highway in India that runs through the Shivaliks at the trijunction of Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh. It is part of the Chandigarh–Shimla Expressway which connects Zirakpur in Punjab to Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh. It forms part of National Highway 5. The stretch runs through 2 km in Zirakpur, Punjab, 21 km in Panchkula, Haryana, and 4.5 km in Parwanoo, Himachal Pradesh. It was constructed by Jaypee Group.
National Highway 5 (NH5) is a primary national highway in India, running from West to East, connecting Firozpur in Punjab to the Sino-Indian border at Shipki La. The highway passes through Moga, Jagraon, Ludhiana, Mohali, Chandigarh, Panchkula, Kalka, Solan, Shimla, Theog, Narkanda, Kumarsain, Rampur Bushahr and continues along the Sutlej River till its terminus near the Tibet border.
Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway is an approved 670 km (420 mi) long, 4-lane wide controlled-access expressway, which will connect Bahadurgarh border near Delhi with Katra in Jammu and Kashmir via Haryana and Punjab. It will have a spur section which will connect Nakodar with Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport located in Raja Sansi, Amritsar. The 397.7 km (247.1 mi) long Delhi–Nakodar–Katra section is National Expressway 5(NE-5) and 99 km (62 mi) long Amritsar–Nakodar section is National Expressway 5A(NE-5A). Once completed, it will reduce the current Delhi-Katra distance from 727 km (452 mi) to 588 km (365 mi) and the time travel will be reduced from 14 hours to 6 hours, and Delhi-Amritsar distance to 405 km (252 mi) and from the time travel will be reduced from 8 hours to only 4 hours.
The Delhi–Panipat Regional Rapid Transit System is an approved, 103 km (64 mi) long, semi-high speed rail corridor connecting Delhi, Sonipat, and Panipat in the National Capital Region. It is one of the three RapidX corridors planned under Phase-1 of the Rapid Rail Transport System of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). With maximum speed of 160 km/h and average speed of 120 km/h, commuters using the system will be able to cover the distance between Panipat and Delhi in 65 minutes. The project is expected to cost ₹ 21,627 crores.
The rail network in the state of Haryana in India, is covered by five rail divisions under three rail zones: North Western Railway zone, Northern Railway zone and North Central Railway zone.
