Karonga is a district in the Northern Region of Malawi. The district covers an area of 3,355 km.² and has a population of 365,028. It is a border district between Malawi and Tanzania, mainly occupied by the Tumbuka and Nkhonde tribes. Other tribes include Henga tribe.

Malawi Washington Association (MWA) was established in 1994 and is the first association in the United States that was organized to promote and retain Malawi and Malawian culture amongst Malawi's diaspora in the United States and Canada. It was founded by Peter Kapakasa, Stafford Chipungu, Jonathan Kamkwalala, and the late Henri Nsanjama. It is a non-political, non-ethnic organization that works to build community amongst the growing number of Malawians in the diaspora. It also works as a social support system to Malawians in the diaspora in order to instill and promote the Malawian values of umunthu. It supports Malawians in the diaspora in various ways whom are living in the United States, including Malawian-Americans and Malawian citizens living in the U.S. It serves to create Malawian identity amongst Malawian-Americans and Malawians in the DC area. This includes hosting social events for a number of Malawians in the diaspora. It works with a number of organization in the DC area and abroad in order to promote Malawian culture and Malawian values and to act as a resource of information on Malawi. As the first organization for Malawians living in the diaspora in the United States, and one of the first organizations for the Malawian diaspora in the world, it has served as a blueprint for other Malawian organizations in the Malawian diaspora to organize in Indiana, Texas, New England and in England.It has also consulted with other Malawian organizations in starting up in the Malawian Diaspora.
Donton Samuel Mkandawire was a Malawian politician, educator, diplomat, and former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for the Mzimba Central seat in the Mzimba District.
The Blackman's Church of Africa Presbyterian is an independent Presbyterian denomination in Malawi. Each of its three founding pastors had been educated at the Livingstonia, Malawi mission and ordained as ministers of the Scottish missionary-led Presbyterian church based there. Although the Livingstonia mission was transferred to its present site in 1878, the missionaries were very cautious about ordaining African ministers. A theological course was established there in 1896 to train African ministers and the first two students completed it by 1900, but the first ordinations were not carried out until 1914. Of the students involved in the course between 1900 and 1914, only around half were ever ordained, on average, about ten years after completing the course, the other half were suspended, resigned or died. Donald Fraser, one of the leading Scottish missionaries, considered that the theological education of African candidates for ordination was insufficient without an "established christian character", which could only be proven through a lengthy probation. Although all three of the founders were ordained, all fell foul of the church establishment and left to form independent churches.
The 2016 TNM Super League was the 31st season of the Super League of Malawi, the top professional league for association football clubs in Malawi since its establishment in 1986. The season played between 16 April and 31 December 2016. Nyasa Big Bullets were the defending champions for the second consecutive year. Kamuzu Barracks won their first league title.
The name Karonga War is given to a number of armed clashes that took place between mid-1887 and mid-1889 near Karonga at the northern end of Lake Malawi in what is now Malawi between a Scottish trading concern called the African Lakes Company Limited and elements of the Ngonde people on one side and Swahili traders and their Henga allies on the other. In the 19th century, it was referred to as the “Arab War”, despite few actual Arabs being involved. Although these conflicts predate formal endorsement of a British Central Africa Protectorate west of Lake Malawi in 1891, European involvement, both by the African Lakes Company and by Germans attempting to prevent Swahili slave trading around Lake Tanganyika in German East Africa, had upset the previous balance between the Ngonde and their neighbours and created the conditions for this conflict. It was between the Tumbuka and Nyakyusa-Ngonde ethnic groups.

Tapiwa Nyasulu-Rweyemamu, is a Malawian diplomat, Social Scientist, women-rights activist, anti-corruption activist and academic. Tapiwa currently leads Women and Gender Policy and Development at the African Union. Before joining the African Union, Tapiwa was Regional Advisor for Southern Africa at Transparency International where she managed and implemented the Africa Regional Anti-Corruption Programme.

Martin Anwel Mtumbuka is a prelate of the Roman Catholic Church currently serving as bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Karonga in Malawi. The diocese was erected by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and he appointed Bishop Mtumbuka as its first bishop.
Inkosi Ya Makhosi M'mbelwa V is the reigning King of the Ngoni and Tumbuka people in Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania. M'mbelwa V is the fifth surviving son of the great-grandfather King Zwangendaba Jele and Queen Munene of the Nzima clan of present-day Eswatini. M'mbelwa V inherited his father's kingdom when he passed away in February 2013 at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Malawi's commercial city, Blantyre, where he was diagnosed with diabetes attack and hypertension. During his death, he was 56 years old. M'mbelwa V's headquarters is in Edingeni, Mzimba. He is married to Inkosikazi M'mbelwa V. During COVID-19 in 2020, he instructed the government to avoid mass gatherings of people.
