Ugochukwu Uba (born 22 May 1949) is a Nigerian politician and former senator of the Anambra South Senatorial Zone. [1] [2] In 2021, he was elected as a governorship candidate of a faction of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the Anambra State gubernatorial election. [3] [4] He represented Anambra South Senatorial Zone from 2003 to 2007. [5]

Early life and education

He hails from Umuoru village in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area in Anambra State, Nigeria. [6] Ugochukwu finished his primary at St Cyprian Primary School, Port Harcourt. Then did his secondary school at Stella Maris College, Port Harcourt; Rivers State and Government College, Umuahia, Abia State. He started his degree in Political science at University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) from 1971 to 1973 before moving to Carleton University, Ottawa where he completed his Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Hons) First Class in political science. [7] He later got his master's degree in Carleton University and then doctorate degree at the Queen's University, Kingston Canada.[ citation needed ] [8] He was also the National Secretary of Nigerian Political Science Association from 1982–1984.

Career

He began his career as a lecturer in UNN where he lectured from 1981 to 1998 at the Department of Political Science and Department of Public Administration. He was later secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Nigeria, Nsukka Branch. [9] He served Anambra State Government between 1990 and 1996 as Director General Public Utilities and Director General Finance and Commissioner, 1999–2003. In 2003, he became a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and represented Anambra South Senatorial Zone till 2007. [10] [11] In 2021, he was elected as a governorship candidate of a faction of PDP in the Anambra State gubernatorial election. [12] [13] [14] Ugochukwu Uba is also a Knight of the Anglican Communion.

With the benefit of hands-on-experience and appreciation of international best practices, he was a prime advocate for reform of operations in the Port Sector and supported the approval of guidelines for the Cabotage Act of 2003, which was necessary for the provision of capital for Nigerian operators to participate in Cabotage within the country.

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly, three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State, Kogi State, and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

The 2023 Abia State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Abia State, concurrent with elections to the Abia State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The 2023 Enugu State gubernatorial election took place on 18th March 2023, to elect the Governor of Enugu State, with Peter Mbah declared winner alongside his running mate Barrister Ifeanyi Ossai of the Peoples Democratic Party (Nigeria), after they got the plurality of votes and won over 25% of the votes in two-third of the state. Mr Mbah polled 160,895 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the Labour Party (Nigeria) candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, who scored 157,552 votes. The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Frank Nweke Jr, garnered 17,983 votes to come a distant third, while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Uche Nnaji, placed fourth, with 14,575 votes. The election was contested in the Tribunal by Chijoike Edeoga but the tribunal eventually upheld the victory of Peter Mbah.
