History

In 1952, the company was established as Japan Vacuum Engineering Co. Ltd, initially focusing on importing and selling various vacuum equipment. In 1973, the company ventured into the vacuum metallurgy business. In 2001, it was renamed to ULVAC, Inc. [3] [4]

In 2014, ULVAC acquired the VAT Vacuum Products AG, a Swiss vacuum valve manufacturer. ULVAC, Inc has been listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange since April 2004.  Ulvac has sales locations in USA, Germany, Poland, Russia, Turkey, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea and China. The N-I or N-1 was a derivative of the American Thor-Delta rocket, produced under license in Japan. The N stood for "Nippon" (Japan). It used a Long Tank Thor first stage, a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries-designed LE-3 engine on the second stage, and three Castor SRMs. Seven were launched between 1975 and 1982, before it was replaced by the N-II. Six of the seven launches were successful, however on the fifth flight, there was recontact between the satellite and the third stage, which caused the satellite to fail.

According to JAXA, the goal of this program is to test high risk, innovative technology that will lead to the space industry gaining competitiveness in the international field.

RAPIS-1 is a satellite launched on 18 January 2019 which for over a year was used to test seven technology demonstration projects. RAPIS-1 was developed and operated by Axelspace Corporation, under the coordination of the Japanese space agency JAXA.

RAISE-2 was a smallsat for technology demonstration, part of the Japanese space agency JAXA's Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration Program. RAISE-2 was launched on 9 November 2021 as the main satellite of Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration-2. RAISE-2 was developed by Mitsubishi Electric.

KOSEN-2 is an educational nanosatellite jointly developed by eight schools of National Institute of Technology in Japan. The satellite would have tested IoT technologies in space. KOSEN-2 was launched on 12 October 2022 by an Epsilon rocket as part of the Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration-3 mission, but the launch resulted in a failure and the satellite was lost.
