The Umbilo River is a river in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The river rises in Kloof to the west of the city of Durban and the mouth of the river is situated in Durban harbour.
The Umbilo River forms part of the Durban Metro's d'Moss trail and conservation efforts.
In 2015 residents complained about polluting the river constantly over the last two years, including terrible smell and a color change to “smurf blue”. [1] In October, 2020 high levels of E. coli have been detected in the river, due to a malfunction at a sewage pump station. [2] One week later 100 thousands litres of crude oil spilled into the Umbilo River. [3] [4]
Already in July, 2020 a petition [5] has been started by Greenpeace Africa and the uMbilo River Watch community group to stop the heavy pollution. [6]

Little Buffalo is an Indian settlement and hamlet in northern Alberta, Canada within Northern Sunrise County. It is located on Highway 986, approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) northeast of the Town of Peace River and 47 kilometres (29 mi) west of Highway 88. Little Buffalo Lake is to the south of the community.
Kumi Naidoo is a human rights and environmental activist. Naidoo started out as a child activist fighting apartheid in South Africa in the 1970s and 1980s. He is a co-founder of the Helping Hands Youth Organisation. He has led global campaigns to end poverty and protect human rights in various roles including being the Ninth Secretary-General of Amnesty International. until December 2019 when he made the decision to step down due to health-related concerns. Kumi was the first African to lead Greenpeace, the international environmentalist group, serving as its International Executive Director from 2009 to 2015.
The Lanzhou–Zhengzhou–Changsha product oil pipeline is a pipeline carrying diesel and other oil products from the northwest to the central regions of China. The 2,070-kilometre (1,290 mi) pipeline starts in Lanzhou in Gansu, and runs through Zhengzhou in Henan to Changsha in Hunan. In Zhengzhou, it is linked with Jinzhou–Zhengzhou product pipeline running from Jinzhou in Liaoning to Zhengzhou.
Water pollution in the United States is a growing problem that became critical in the 19th century with the development of mechanized agriculture, mining, and industry, although laws and regulations introduced in the late 20th century have improved water quality in many water bodies. Extensive industrialization and rapid urban growth exacerbated water pollution as a lack of regulation allowed for discharges of sewage, toxic chemicals, nutrients and other pollutants into surface water.
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was discovered on the afternoon of 22 April 2010 when a large oil slick began to spread at the former rig site. According to the Flow Rate Technical Group, the leak amounted to about 4.9 million barrels of oil, exceeding the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill as the largest ever to originate in U.S.-controlled waters and the 1979 Ixtoc I oil spill as the largest spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP has challenged this calculation saying that it is overestimated as it includes over 810,000 barrels of oil which was collected before it could enter the Gulf waters.
The MV Treasure oil spill occurred on 23 June 2000, when the ship sank six miles off the coast of South Africa while transporting iron ore from China to Brazil. The ship was carrying an estimated 1,300 tons of fuel oil, some of which spilled into the ocean, threatening the African penguin populations living on nearby islands. Cleanup efforts began promptly after the incident with particular attention being paid to salvaging the penguin communities.
