Background

Unima was founded by Aziz Hassam Ismail in 1965. In 1973, he acquired the modest shrimp-fishing operations of the small company Les Pêcheries de Nossi-Bé. During the 1990s, Unima launched Aqualma, 1,800 acres of aquaculture basins, and developed domesticated specific pathogen-free (SPF) broodstock of black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon). [1] [2]

In 1998, Amyne H. Ismail, son of Aziz Hassam Ismail, became CEO of Unima. Under his leadership, Unima turned into a fully-integrated shrimp production group, including a breeding and broodstock selection center, a larvae to post-larvae center, a software development company, a conditioning center (in France), and a high-quality fish-food factory (in La Réunion). [3] [2]

In 2012, Unima started distribution in China. [4] In 2012, Unima was hit by the white spot syndrome and overhauled its production process. [5]

In 2019, the Indian government authorized Aqualma to supply SPF black tiger broodstock to Indian producers to relaunch its domestic production of black tigers. [6]

Quality, environmental and social commitments

Unima's shrimp became the first non-European food product to be acknowledged under the French quality Label Rouge. [7] They also obtained the Ikizukuri certification in Japan, and are certified organic by the European Union. [2]

Since 2006, Unima has been involved with UNICEF’s WASH program, [2] and working with WWF in Madagascar to implement a Biodiversity Action Plan since 2007. [8] The company has planted over 1 million mangrove trees and developed fields of cashew (Verama). Unima also applies the principles of the FAO code of conduct for Responsible Fishing. [9] [10]

Besides, Unima pioneered carbon accounting, as one of the first companies in the world to apply the method developed by Jean-Marc Jancovici in the early 2000s. This project was supported by the French Development Agency and the Malagasy Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. [11]

In 2016, the company's aquaculture farm Aqualma in Mahajamba was the first in Africa to be awarded Aquaculture Stewardship Council certification. [12] [13]

Marine shrimp farming Aquaculture of shrimp or prawns

Marine shrimp farming is an aquaculture business for the cultivation of marine shrimp or prawns for human consumption. Although traditional shrimp farming has been carried out in Asia for centuries, large-scale commercial shrimp farming began in the 1970s, and production grew steeply, particularly to match the market demands of the United States, Japan and Western Europe. The total global production of farmed shrimp reached more than 1.6 million tonnes in 2003, representing a value of nearly 9 billion U.S. dollars. About 75% of farmed shrimp is produced in Asia, in particular in China and Thailand. The other 25% is produced mainly in Latin America, where Brazil, Ecuador, and Mexico are the largest producers. The largest exporting nation is India.

Broodstock, or broodfish, are a group of mature individuals used in aquaculture for breeding purposes. Broodstock can be a population of animals maintained in captivity as a source of replacement for, or enhancement of, seed and fry numbers. These are generally kept in ponds or tanks in which environmental conditions such as photoperiod, temperature and pH are controlled. Such populations often undergo conditioning to ensure maximum fry output. Broodstock can also be sourced from wild populations where they are harvested and held in maturation tanks before their seed is collected for grow-out to market size or the juveniles returned to the sea to supplement natural populations. This method, however, is subject to environmental conditions and can be unreliable seasonally, or annually. Broodstock management can improve seed quality and number through enhanced gonadal development and fecundity.

Sustainable seafood is seafood that is caught or farmed in ways that consider the long-term vitality of harvested species and the well-being of the oceans, as well as the livelihoods of fisheries-dependent communities. It was first promoted through the sustainable seafood movement which began in the 1990s. This operation highlights overfishing and environmentally destructive fishing methods. Through a number of initiatives, the movement has increased awareness and raised concerns over the way our seafood is obtained.

Organic aquaculture is a holistic method for farming fish and other marine species in line with organic principles. The ideals of this practice established sustainable marine environments with consideration for naturally occurring ecosystems, use of pesticides, and the treatment of aquatic life. Managing aquaculture organically has become more popular since consumers are concerned about the harmful impacts of aquaculture on themselves and the environment.

Eyestalk ablation is the removal of one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) eyestalks from a crustacean.
