Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance

Last updated

The Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance (UNICOF) is a trade union representing workers in various sectors, in Ghana.

The union was founded in August 2003, as a split from the Industrial and Commercial Workers' Union (ICU). The Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) accepted the new union as an affiliate, which led UNICOF to resign from the TUC. [1] [2] On formation, the union had 4,000 members, and by 2011 this had grown to 12,000. [3]

The union was initially led by General Secretary John Esiape, but he was suspended from office in 2016. [4] Since then, it has been led by Chief Executive Officer John Senanu Amegashie. [5]

The Industrial Relations Act 1971 (c.72) was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, since repealed. It was based on proposals outlined in the governing Conservative Party's manifesto for the 1970 general election. The goal was to stabilize industrial relations by forcing concentration of bargaining power and responsibility in the formal union leadership, using the courts. The act was intensely opposed by unions, and helped undermine the government of Edward Heath. It was repealed by the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act 1974 when the Labour Party returned to government.
