Unwoman [2] is a Hindi-language drama film produced by Gunjan Goel under the banner of Hashtag Films LLP. [3] The film is categorised under the genre of love, social issues, LGBTQ+, and drama. [4] The earlier name of the film was Sanwri. The film won the best foreign film award in the Merced Queer Film Festival. UnWoman also garnered the title of best LGBTQ Film in Northeast India International Film. UnWoman garnered huge appreciation when officially screened at KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival and Taiwan International Queer Film Festival. [5]

Production

Pallavi Roy has directed the film. Abhay Rustom Sopori has composed the music, and Dhanraj Dadhich has penned the lyrics. Shakil Rehan Khan has handled the cinematography, while Gunjan Goel and Firoj Alam have edited the film. Abhay Rustom Sopori has also composed the background score. The film is set to release on 5 May 2023. The film was shot in Osian, Jodhpur, and is being distributed by Manoj Nandwana of Jai Viratra Entertainment Limited. [6]

Synopsis

The film revolves around the life of Bhanwar, a simple man from a village in Rajasthan, whose life is dominated by his uncle Bhairo. In order to improve their living conditions, Bhairo coaxes Bhanwar to buy a bride. However, the human trafficker they contact dupes Bhanwar and sells him Sanwri, who is an intersex/transgender person. Sanwri's gentle nature gradually softens Bhanwar's heart, and their bond based on necessity turns into love. However, Bhairo treats Sanwri as an object to serve his needs, and tension arises when Bhanwar objects. Sanwri's identity is revealed, and they are forced to confront the harsh judgment, mockery, taboos, and hypocrisy of society. [7]

The KASHISH Pride Film Festival is an annual LGBTQ event that has been held in Mumbai, India, since 2010. The film festival screens gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer films from India and around the world. It is voted as one of the top five LGBT film festivals in the world.

Humsafar Trust is an NGO in Mumbai that promotes LGBT rights. Founded by Ashok Row Kavi, Suhail Abbasi, and Sridhar Rangayan in 1994, it is one of the largest and most active of such organisations in India. It provides counselling, advocacy and healthcare to LGBT communities and has helped reduce violence, discrimination and stigma against them. Humsafar Trust is the convenor member of Integrated Network for Sexual Minorities (INFOSEM).

Betu Singh was a lesbian rights activist, born in an Army family in Kolkata. She set up the Sangini Trust, an NGO based in Delhi under the umbrella of the Naz Foundation, in 1997 to fight for lesbian rights. The NGO works for women attracted to women and individuals dealing with their gender identity, providing emergency response services to LBT individuals facing rights violations. Sangini is the oldest non-governmental organization in India to reach out to LBT persons and one of the few registered lesbian organisations in India.

Noblemen is an Indian English language drama film directed by Vandana Kataria. The film stars Kunal Kapoor, Ali Haji, Ivan Rodrigues, Mohommad Ali Mir, Ankit Kukreti, Muskkaan Jaferi, Shaan Groverr, Soni Razdan, Manav Chauhan, Parag Gupta and Abhay Narang in major roles. Roobha is a 2018 Canadian film directed and written by Lenin M. Sivam. It was produced by Warren Sinnathamby under the banner of Next Productions and stars Amrit Sandhu and Antonythasan Jesuthasan. It is based on a story by Antonythasan Jesuthasan, who writes under the pseudonym Shoba Sakthi. The film explores the harsh realities faced by a young South-Asian trans-woman who struggles to make a living in Toronto after she is ostracized by her family.
