Uranium Club (also known as The Minneapolis Uranium Club Band) is an American punk rock band based in Minneapolis. The band consists of members Brendan Wells, Harry Wohl, Ian Stemper and Matt Stagner. The band has released four albums on Static Shock Records and other independent labels, and been associated with the egg punk subgenre.

History

Uranium Club formed in late 2013. [1] In 2014, Uranium Club distributed their debut album, Human Exploration, originally as a self-released cassette. [2] [3] [1] Maximum Rocknroll praised the album's "midwestern-freak aesthetic" and "choppy, sharp, borderline-angular" sound. [2] The band secured a record deal with London record label Static Shock Records after cold calling founder Tom Ellis. [4] The band's sophomore album, All of Them Naturals, was released on 3 November 2016 on Static Shock Records and Fashionable Idiots, led by the single Who Made The Man? on 9 October. [5] [6] Describing the album as a work from "one of contemporary punk's most creative bands", Exclaim praised its "bizarre musical and lyrical ideas". [7] Pitchfork considered the album's "twitchy neurosis" and "sardonic" humor to bridge a line between being "self-aware" and "aggressively obtuse". [8] A live album, Live! at Arci Taun!, performed in Fidenza in November 2016, was released in 2017 on Castle Face. [9]

The band's third album, The Cosmo Cleaners: The Higher Calling of Business Provocateurs, was released on 15 March 2019, although a test pressing of the album was distributed on tour previous year. [10] A.V. Club praised the album's "jagged punk with a satirical edge", stating it found the band "sprawling out while building new alcoves in their weirdo mythology". [11] Pitchfork named The Cosmo Cleaners as one of the ten best punk and garage rock albums of the year. [12] PunkNews commended the band's "tight knit looseness" and resemblance to post-punk band Minutemen. [13] Uranium Club released their fourth album, Infants Under the Bulb, on 1 March 2024 through Anti Fade Records and Static Shock Records, [14] led by single Small Grey Man on 18 January. [3] Exclaim praised the album as "ambitious as ever" and "complex but strangely accessible". [15]

Musical style and influences

The band's music has been described as punk, [7] [8] [15] [11] and representative of a midwestern scene of egg punk bands, a subgenre of DIY punk bands influenced by DEVO. [16] [17] [18] [19] Similar to DEVO, the band employs narrative elements in the concept and packaging of their music, including the operations of the titular Club and the fictional National Pen Company and Sunbelt Chemical Corporation. Noise is the nineteenth studio album by Japanese rock band Boris. The Japanese edition of the album was released on 18 June 2014 via Avex Group's sub-label Tearbridge Records and consists of the original album plus other songs previously released on other endeavors, such as "Kimi no Yukue" which was used for a promotional video for the Chunsoft video game Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward in Japan. This is the second Boris album released through a major label. It was released on 17 June 2014 through Sargent House record label internationally on both CD and double vinyl. Sheer Mag is an American rock band from Philadelphia formed in 2014. A combination of 1970s rock and punk ethos, the band continued to gather attention, releasing three 7-inch EPs before March 2016. In January 2015, Rolling Stone featured the band as one of "10 New Artists You Need To Know", describing them as "a gang of punks with a not-so-secret love of Seventies classic rock." Four of five band members attended the State University of New York at Purchase. In 2016, the band was part of the Coachella 2016 line-up and performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers. On May 10, 2017, Sheer Mag released "Need To Feel Your Love", the first track off their first full-length record, Need to Feel Your Love. On June 19, 2019, they announced their second LP, A Distant Call.

Egg punk is a subgenre of punk rock that emerged during the 2010s. It is an internet-based microgenre based upon bands with a lo-fi recording style and satirical tone. The genre is influenced by new wave band Devo and historically referred to as Devo-core. The origins of egg punk are attributed both to a community of DIY midwestern American punk rock artists from the early 2010s, including The Coneheads and Lumpy and the Dumpers, and their subsequent characterization as "egg punk" by a series of internet memes circulated in the late 2010s.

Woolf is a queercore punk band from London, England. They formed in 2009 at Lambeth Women’s Project, and have released two LP records on Hackney punk label La Vida Es Un Mus. They played the Static Shock Records Weekender in both 2012 and 2017. Members of the band have also played in Corey Orbison, Roseanne Barrr, Frau, Score, Dregs, Dead Name, and Child’s Pose.
