Utz Rothe (born December 2, 1940, died December 24, 2024 [1] ) was an Austrian artist whose work ranges from the realistic delights of European landscapes to the graphic arts. Rothe's work is composed of three different styles, although he prefers to refer his style as Depressionismos, in more common terms one would define him as a follower of (abstraction) expressionism and realism.
Rothe followed his art training at the 'Akademie de Bildenden Künste' in Vienna under the instructions of Robin Christian Andersen, Hessing (?) and Herbert Böckl from 1961 till 1967. His most influential master is Anderson, where one can detect strong similarities in the construction and style of Rothe's paintings with his. From 1967 till 2000, alongside Rothe's profession as an artist, he had a career as an art teacher and later came to lead the weekly 'Aktzeichnen' at the Kunstler-Haus in Vienna. His love for art already became evident in early adolescence when he painted his first oil paintings on cardboard, but at the age of seventeen, Rothe's life took a dramatic turn when he lost his brother in an accident at the Stadionbad in Vienna. The scars of this tragedy can still be read on Rothe's face, his art works and 'Atelier'. Entering into his workspace, one finds chaos, leaving barely a centimeter uncovered, the room is filled with finished and unfinished works of art, objects and muddle as if approaching an overflowing 'Wunderkammer'.
The influence of Kandinsky's later works such 'On white' can be seen in Rothe's graphic series, though each individual work carries an after taste of morbidity and violent sex, some being more explicit than others. Hence, not everyone may feel drawn to the aesthetic expression of his graphics or understand the meaning and thought that lie beneath each of them. Nonetheless, although his graphics instigate a feeling of unease, as if he is in fact touching underneath our skins, showcasing or posing abstract connotations of our reproductive organs, he enables dialogue, revealing that topics such as sex and death are still taboo. The shapes and figures that one can find in his graphic art might allow one to feel that Utz Rothe does indeed carry a fascination with the sciences and our anatomic system, as one of his critiques has suggested.
Egon Leo Adolf Ludwig Schiele was an Austrian Expressionist painter. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and for the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism. Gustav Klimt, a figurative painter of the early 20th century, was a mentor to Schiele.

Edo Murtić was a painter from Croatia, best known for his lyrical abstraction and abstract expressionism style. He worked in a variety of media, including oil painting, gouache, graphic design, ceramics, mosaics, murals and theatrical set design. Murtić travelled and exhibited extensively in Europe and North America, gaining international recognition for his work, which can be found in museums, galleries and private collections worldwide. He was one of the founders of the group "March" (Mart) in 1956, and received many international awards. In 1958 Murtić participated in the three biggest events in the world of contemporary art: the Venice Biennale, the Carnegie Prize in Pittsburgh, and Documenta in Kassel. Interest in the art of Edo Murtić continues to grow, with retrospective exhibits in major museums.
The Vienna Secession is an art movement, closely related to Art Nouveau, that was formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian painters, graphic artists, sculptors and architects, including Josef Hoffman, Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner and Gustav Klimt. They resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists in protest against its support for more traditional artistic styles. Their most influential architectural work was the Secession exhibitions hall designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich as a venue for expositions of the group. Their official magazine was called Ver Sacrum, which published highly stylised and influential works of graphic art. In 1905 the group itself split, when some of the most prominent members, including Klimt, Wagner, and Hoffmann, resigned in a dispute over priorities, but it continued to function, and still functions today, from its headquarters in the Secession Building. In its current form, the Secession exhibition gallery is independently led and managed by artists.
In art history, secession refers to a historic break between a group of avant-garde artists and conservative European standard-bearers of academic and official art in the late 19th and early 20th century. The name was first suggested by Georg Hirth (1841–1916), the editor and publisher of the influential German art magazine Jugend (Youth), which also went on to lend its name to the Jugendstil. His word choice emphasized the tumultuous rejection of legacy art while it was being reimagined.

Michael Salter is an American contemporary artist and educator. Salter works in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, digital art, animation, kinetic sculpture, and sculptural assemblage. His work often references and subverts the visual language of corporate branding and graphic design, and reflects his desire to, in his words: "sort out the cacophony of visual noise in order to rethink meaning, motive, perception and narrative." His work has been described as postmodern, whimsical, quirky, unsettling, cryptic, and thought-provoking. Salter is perhaps best known for his giant Styrobots - a series of site-specific installations which rise ceiling-high to dominate their space.
