Uxue Alberdi Estibaritz (Elgoibar, Gipuzkoa, 18 March 1984) is a Basque writer and bertsolari.
She studied at the Leioa campus and graduated in journalism.
She started winning Bertsolaritza competitions in 2003, Julene Azpeitia from Durango was the first, followed by the Xenpelar Award in 2006, and the Osinalde Award for young bertsolari in 2008. [1]
In 2005, thanks to the Igartza scholarship for young writers, she wrote his first book: Aulki bat elurretan (2007). In 2007, thanks also to another creative scholarship, the Joseba Jaka Scholarship, she wrote the book Aulki jokoa (2009). In 2013, she published Euli-giro and, in 2017, Jenisjoplin, by the publisher Susa. [2]
In 2010, she delved into children's literature by publishing the story Ezin dut eta zer? In 2016, she won the Euskadi Prize for Children's and Youth Literature in Basque with Besarkada. [3] She teaches literature workshops, writes opinion articles, and also works as a translator and lyricist. Together with Ainhoa Agirreazaldegi, she launched the so-called Feminist Bertsolaritza School.
Bernardo Atxaga, pseudonym of Joseba Irazu Garmendia, is a Spanish Basque writer and self-translator.
Arnaldo Otegi Mondragón is a Basque politician who is currently General Secretary of Basque nationalist party EH Bildu. He was member of the Basque Parliament for both Herri Batasuna and Euskal Herritarrok. He was one of the key negotiators during the unsuccessful peace talks in Loiola and Geneva, in 2006.
Bertsolaritza or bertsolarism is the art of singing extemporaneously composed songs in Basque according to various melodies and rhyming patterns. Bertsos can be composed at a variety of occasions but are performed generally by one or various bertsolaris onstage in an event arranged for the purpose or as a sideshow, in homage ceremonies, in benefit lunches and suppers, with friends or at a competition. Such a sung piece of composition is called a bertso, the person who sings it is called a bertsolari and the art of composing bertsos is called bertsolaritza in Basque. Traditionally these were sung by men but there is an increasing number of young female bertsolaris today.
Kirmen Uribe is a Basque language writer. He won the National Prize for Literature in Spain in 2009 for his first novel Bilbao-New York-Bilbao, which has been translated into over 15 languages. His poetry collection Meanwhile Take My Hand, translated into English by Elizabeth Macklin, was a finalist for the 2008 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. His works have been published in The New Yorker, Open City and Little Star.
Although the first instances of coherent Basque phrases and sentences go as far back as the San Millán glosses of around 950, the large-scale damage done by periods of great instability and warfare, such as the clan wars of the Middle Ages, the Carlist Wars and the Spanish Civil War, led to the scarcity of written material predating the 16th century.
José Luis Álvarez Enparantza, better known by his pseudonym Txillardegi, was a Basque linguist, politician, and writer. He was born and raised in the Basque Country, and although he did not learn the Basque language until the age of 17, he later came to be considered one of the most influential figures in Basque nationalism and culture in the second half of the 20th century. He was one of the founders of ETA, but in 1967 he left because he did not agree with its political line.
Laura Mintegi Lakarra is a Basque author, politician and a professor at the University of the Basque Country. Although she was born in Navarre, she moved to Biscay at an early age and has lived there ever since; first in Bilbao and later in Algorta.
Joxe Azurmendi Otaegi is a Basque writer, philosopher, essayist and poet. He has published numerous articles and books on ethics, politics, the philosophy of language, technique, Basque literature and philosophy in general.
Xabier Lete Bergaretxe was a Basque writer, poet, singer and politician. He started to write from an early age and he often published articles in the magazine "Zeruko Argia". In 1965 he created a band of Basque Music with Mikel Laboa, Benito Lertxundi, Joxean Artze, Jose Angel Irigarai and Lourdes Iriondo. The band, which was called "Ez Dok Amairu", disappeared in 1972, but Xabier Lete kept on singing with Lourdes Iriondo, who, by that time, had become his wife.
Twist is a 2011 crime novel, with elements of political thriller, written by Basque writer Harkaitz Cano. The book won the 2012 Basque Literature Prize. The original Basque version was published by the Editorial Susa in 2011, Gerardo Markuleta translated the novel to Spanish and it was published by Seix Barral in 2013. The English translation by Amaia Gabantxo was published in 2018 by Archipelago Books.
Koldo Izagirre Urreaga is an innovative Basque writer who has worked in several genres of literature, including poetry, novels, and tales. Izagirre has translated works by classic authors into other languages. He has also written texts, both for young people and adults. In addition, he has produced journal and magazine articles, and written television and film scripts.
Elena Odriozola, born in Donostia – San Sebastián is an illustrator of books for children and young adults. For her lasting contribution to children's literature she received the Golden Apple of the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava (2015) for her work illustrating in 2013 Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus.
Yolanda Arrieta Malaxetxeberria is a Basque writer. She completed her teaching studies in the school of teachers of Ezkoriatza, in the speciality of Basque Philosophy. After that, she studied theater at the Antzerti school and finally, she studied Cultural and Social Anthropology, at the Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Sciences of San Sebastián. Her greatest activity has always been literature, mainly as a creative writer and also conducting literary workshops and fostering a taste for Literature and Reading.

Joxantonio Ormazabal (1948–2010) was a Basque and Spanish author of primarily children's literature in the Basque language. He also published under the pen name of Joxean.
Patxi Zubizarreta is a Spanish writer who writes in the Basque language (Euskara). He studied Basque philology in Vitoria, where he currently resides. He is an author of children's and youth literature, a specialty in which he has won several prizes, has also been dedicated to translation and literature for adults and has a facet as creator of shows that combine music, image and literature. He was included in the White Ravens catalog and the IBBY Honor Roll.
Izar Algueró Txibite is a Spanish film, theater and television actress, singer, bertsolari and dancer.
Katixa Agirre Miguelez is a Spanish writer of Basque origin. She was born in Gasteiz in 1981. She studied audiovisual communication at UPV/EHU, graduating in 2003. She obtained a master's degree in screenwriting, followed by a PhD in audiovisual communication, also from UPV/EHU, receiving her doctorate in 2010. Her thesis analyzed the representations of the Lolita myth in Hollywood films. She then did postdoctoral work, including stints at QMUL and University of East Anglia in the UK. Since 2013, she has taught at the Universidad del Pais Vasco.
Miren Amuriza Plaza is a Spanish bertsolari and Biscayan writer. She has collaborated with some music groups, singing and writing lyrics. In 2017, she was the recipient of the Premio Igartza.
