Chakravarti Rajagopalachari,popularly known as Rajaji or C.R., also known as Mootharignar Rajaji,was an Indian statesman,writer,lawyer,and independence activist. Rajagopalachari was the last Governor-General of India,as India became a republic in 1950. He was also the first Indian-born governor-general,as all previous holders of the post were British nationals. He also served as leader of the Indian National Congress,Premier of the Madras Presidency,Governor of West Bengal,Minister for Home Affairs of the Indian Union and Chief Minister of Madras state. Rajagopalachari founded the Swatantra Party and was one of the first recipients of India's highest civilian award,the Bharat Ratna. He vehemently opposed the use of nuclear weapons and was a proponent of world peace and disarmament. During his lifetime,he also acquired the nickname 'Mango of Salem'.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) is the oldest communist party in India and one of the eight national parties in the country. The CPI was founded in Kanpur on 26 December 1925.
Ramaswamy Venkataraman was an Indian lawyer,Indian independence activist and politician who served as a Union Minister and as the eighth president of India. Venkataraman was born in Rajamadam village in Tanjore district,Madras Presidency. He studied law and practised in the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court of India. In his young age,he was an activist of the Indian independence movement and participated in the Quit India Movement. He was appointed as the member of the Constituent Assembly and the provisional cabinet. He was elected to the Lok Sabha four times and served as Union Finance Minister and Defence Minister. In 1984,he was elected as the seventh vice president of India and in 1987,he became the eighth President of India and served from 1987 to 1992. He also served as a State minister under K. Kamaraj and M. Bhaktavatsalam.
Kyasamballi Chengaluraya Reddy was the first Chief Minister of Mysore State. Reddy later served as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh.
Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir was an Indian politician and Punjabi language writer. He was the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1 November 1966 to 8 March 1967.

The first legislative assembly Election to the Madras state based on universal adult suffrage was held in March 1952. This was the first election held in Madras state after the Indian Independence. This election was officially known as the 1951 Madras State Election,even though through delays,actual voting didn't take place until early 1952.
The Goa liberation movement was a movement which fought to end Portuguese colonial rule in Goa,India. The movement built on the small scale revolts and uprisings of the 19th century,and grew powerful during the period 1940–1961. The movement was conducted both inside and outside Goa,and was characterised by a range of tactics including nonviolent demonstrations,revolutionary methods and diplomatic efforts. However,Portuguese control of its Indian colonies ended only when India liberated Goa in 1961 and incorporated the territories into the Indian Union.

Pandurang Purushottam Shirodkar was a freedom fighter and first speaker of Goa Assembly. He was born in Indian state of Goa,studied Law in Portuguese India and worked as an editor with Navashakti daily in Mumbai. Later he participated actively in Goa's struggle for freedom,was in exile in Africa and Portugal for many years. He has been a member of the Indian National Congress and was a prominent figure in the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. Shirodkar authored many books in Marathi,Konkani,English and Portuguese,he also translated Bal Gangadhar Tilak's Shrimadbhagwadgeetarahasya into Portuguese.
Bankim Mukherjee (1896–1961) was an Indian Bengali communist politician. He had taken part in the Civil Disobedience Movement,the Indian Communist movement and had organized various trade unions and Kisan sabhas. His wife Shanta Bhalerao was the Assistant Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress.
Shivajirao Girdhar Patil was an Indian social activist and politician from the state of Maharashtra. He began his social activism at an early age when he participated in the Indian independence movement. Post-independence,he was associated with various political parties and had been member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council,Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and even the Rajya Sabha for one term. In 2013,he was presented with the Padma Bhushan,India's third highest civilian award. He was the father of Indian film actress Smita Patil.
Satyapal Dang (1920–2013) was an Indian independence activist,writer and later-day politician from Punjab. He was a legislator of Punjab State Legislative Assembly,representing the Communist Party of India for four terms and a Minister of Food and Civil Supplies in the United Front ministry led by Justice Gurnam Singh. He was also involved in trade union movement in India,aligning with the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC). The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan,in 1998,for his contributions to society.
The Kerala Legislative Assembly election of 1957 was the first assembly election in the Indian state of Kerala. The Communist Party of India won the election with 60 seats. The election led to the formation of first democratically elected communist government in India.
Bhaskarrao Tukaram Auti was an Indian politician. He won a seat representing Parner in the 1952 and 1957 Bombay Legislative Assembly elections. In the 1952 election,he stood as a Communist Party of India candidate. He was the first Communist MLA of India in the first general elections conducted post-independence. He obtained 12,570 votes (56.67%). In the 1957 election,he stood as an independent,obtaining 14,519 votes (71.05%). In the 1962 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election he finished in second place in Parner,obtaining 6,787 votes (24.93%).

Sudhir Chandra Das was an Indian politician. During the struggle for Indian independence,he took part in the Salt,No-Tax and Quit India Movements. He represented Contai North and later Contai South in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly,becoming Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in 1969.

In 1964 a major split occurred in the Communist Party of India. The split was the culmination of decades of tensions and factional infighting. When India became independent in 1947,differences arose of how to adapt to the new situation. As relations between the Nehru government and the Soviet Union improved,a faction that sought cooperation with the dominant Indian National Congress emerged within CPI. This tendency was led by S.A. Dange,whose role in the party hierarchy became increasingly controversial. When the Sino-Indian War broke out in 1962 Dange's opponents within CPI were jailed,but when they were released they sought to challenge his leadership. In 1964 the party was finally divided into two,with the left faction forming the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The split had a lot of regional variations. It also impacted other organizations,such as trade union and peasant movements. The split has been studied extensively by scholars,who have sought to analyze the various domestic and international factors involved.
