V. Vijayakumar is the Vice Chancellor of National Law Institute University, Bhopal. He was a professor in National Law School of India University. [1] He is the former vice chancellor, Dr. Ambedkar Law University, [2] [3] Chennai between 29 July 2010 and 28 July 2013. [4] [5] [6] He is a distinguished visitor of various universities. [4] [7] [8] [9] He suggested many changes for improvement of Legal Education in India. [10] His areas of specialization include Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Human Rights Law, Law of Elections, Refugee and Humanitarian Law. He held the UNHCR Chair on Refugee Law and has keen interest in IT administration and infrastructure. He is in the board of several National Law Schools steering various policy issues. [11] He is the member of Academic Council of National Law University, Delhi [12] As of 2023, he teaches an elective course on Election Law.

Career

He was appointed as assistant professor of law at the NLSIU in 1988, as associate professor in 1992 and Professor of Law in 1997. Prior to joining NLSIU he was assistant professor of political science at the Presidency College, Madras, between September 1978 and May 1988. He was the registrar of NLSIU between 2005 and 2008. He holds the UNHCR Chair on Refugee Law since April 1997. He was a member of Karnataka State Higher Education Council between 2012 and 2016. He is presently serving as the vice chancellor of National Law Institute University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, after being appointed to the post in May 2018.[ citation needed ]

Publications

He has published more than 47 articles in national and international journals and has contributed to a couple of books [13] as well. He was chairman, Under-Graduate Council between 1997 and 1999 and of the Post-Graduate Council between 2003 and 2005 at NLSIU.[ citation needed ]

Awards

He was awarded Ryōichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship at the Salzburg Seminar in 1993. He was a visiting scholar with York University, Toronto, Canada at its Centre for Refugee Studies during 2000–2003 and was exchange visitor at National University of Singapore during November 2004 to February 2005 under the Asian Law Institute programme. He visited the U.S. in 1988 under the International Visitor's Programme of the USIS on ‘The Living Constitution’. Representing the Law School, he was a member of the board of governors of the Asian Law Institute located in Singapore National University till 2009. He was conferred the ‘Amity Academic Excellence Award’ during February 2011 by the Amity International Business School of the Amity University, Noida. For the ‘Best Performance’ in respect of the Youth Red Cross Movement, he received an award from the Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu branch on the World Red Cross Day in 2012. Again the same Indian Red Cross Society presented the ‘Best Vice Chancellor Award 2011–2012’ at the 63rd Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions Day on 23 August 2012.[ citation needed ]

John Matthai CIE (1886–1959) was an economist who served as Independent India's first Railway Minister and subsequently as well as India's Finance Minister, taking office shortly after the presentation of India's first Budget, in 1948. He was born on January 10, 1886, as the son of Challiyal Thomas Matthai and Anna Thayyil to an Anglican Syrian Christian family. He graduated in economics from the University of Madras. He served as a Professor and Head in University of Madras from 1922 to 1925. He presented two Budgets as India's Finance Minister, but resigned following the 1950 Budget in protest against the increasing power of the Planning Commission and P. C. Mahalanobis. He was the first Chairman of the State Bank of India when it was set up in 1955. He was the founding President of the Governing Body of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) in New Delhi, India's first independent economic policy institute established in 1956. He served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai from 1955 till 1957 and then as the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Kerala from 1957 to 1959. His nephew, Verghese Kurien, is generally recognized as the architect of India's White Revolution. Dr. John Matthai Centre, Thrissur, located on the large plot of land donated by his family, is named in his honour. His wife, Achamma Matthai was an Indian social worker and a women's rights activist. The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralized national-level entrance test for admissions to the 25 out of 27 National Law Universities (NLU) except NLU Delhi and NLU Meghalaya which administer their own entrance exams, the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) and the NLU Meg Admission Test, respectively. Both AILET & MEG UAT are anticipated to be merged into CLAT in the coming years. CLAT was first introduced in 2008 as a centralized entrance examination for admission to the National Law Schools/Universities in India. A few private and self-financed law schools in India also use these scores for law admissions. S. Muralidhar is an Indian Judge. He is former Chief Justice of Orissa High Court and Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Delhi High Court.

Sudhir Krishnaswamy is an Indian academic, administrator, and civil society activist who is currently the Vice-Chancellor of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) and is a co-founder of the not-for-profit research trust Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR). Krishnaswamy took over as VC of NLSIU from R. Venkata Rao in September 2019. Krishnaswamy is the first alumnus of NLSIU to be appointed as the VC of the institution. On 6 May 2020, Facebook appointed him to its content oversight board. He was awarded the Infosys Prize 2022 in the Humanities category, for his insightful understanding of the Indian Constitution.
