VFX Union also known as the IATSE VFX Union, Visual Effects Union or International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Visual Effects Union is a North American labor union for visual effects artists, and a wing of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

History

The organization traces its origin to a group of 300 VFX artists who created the "VFX Production Group" on a Slack channel in 2020. They began to compare what salaries different studios provided. [1] The VFX Union officially formed in 2012. [2] [3] In 2016 after the reports of poor working conditions on Sony's Sausage Party the IATSE filed a complaint with the British Columbia Ministry of Labour's Employment Standards Branch on behalf of the artists of the films and reached out to the VFX Union to offer help. [4] [5] Amidst the 2022 and 2023 Hollywood labor disputes the organization encouraged unionization among United States and Canadian visual effects artists. [6] [3] [1] [2] [7] [8] [9] [10] Among the IATSE VFX Union's services is performing surveys of workers' conditions within the industry. The first was published in March 2023. [6] Their poll showed that two thirds of visual effects artists surveyed believed that the current situation in the industry was unsustainable. [11]

The company is named after the New Zealand wētā, one of the world's largest insects, which was historically featured in the company logo.

It was awarded the Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre in 1993.

Game Workers Unite has supported actions including Riot Games's 2019 walkout over sex discrimination and social media campaigns against CEOs who executed layoffs. The British chapter of Game Workers Unite is legally recognized as a union within the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain and is working to end crunch overtime practices, improve diversity and inclusion, support targeted workers, and ensure steady and fair wages. Game Workers Unite co-founder Emma Kinema was hired by the Communications Workers of America to organize workers in the high tech and video game industries in early 2020, the first American initiative of its kind in those sectors.

Microsoft recognizes 7 trade unions representing 1,750 workers in the United States at its video game subsidiaries Activision Blizzard and ZeniMax Media. US workers have been vocal in opposing military and law-enforcement contracts with Microsoft. Bethesda Game Studios is unionized in Canada. Microsoft South Korea recognizes its union since 2017. German employees have elected works councils since 1998.

The 1937 Fleischer Studios strike was a labor strike involving workers at Fleischer Studios in New York City. The strike commenced on May 7 of that year and ended on October 12. The strike was the first major labor dispute in the animation industry and resulted in the industry's first union contracts.

The 1982 animators' strike was a labor strike conducted by American animators in the Greater Los Angeles area. The strike, organized by the Motion Picture Screen Cartoonists Local 839, was caused by disagreements between the labor union and studios over runaway productions, a term referring to outsourcing production work to outside of the metropolitan area. The strike ran from August to October and ended in failure for the union, who failed to win concessions from the studios.
