Valentino Leonard Mokiwa (born 1954) is a former Tanzanian Anglican Archbishop. He was elected as the Primate and Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Tanzania in 2008 and occupied the position until 2013. [1] Since being elected in April 2002,Mokiwa was the Bishop of the Diocese of Dar es Salaam,until his deposition in January 2017.
Mokiwa studied at Virginia Theological Seminary,in Alexandria,United States,and became a principal at St. Mark's Theological College in Dar es Salaam. [2]
Mokiwa was Bishop of the Diocese of Dar es Salaam when he was elected the new Archbishop of Tanzania in a special session held during the General Synod of his church in Dodoma,on 28 February 2008. He was installed in Dodoma on 25 May 2008,succeeding Donald Mtetemela. [3] He lost the reelection in a controversial runoff on 21 February 2013 to Jacob Chimeledya,who was amid fraud charges. Mokiwa's successor would be enthroned on 19 May 2013. [4] While Mokiwa remained as Bishop of Dar es Salaam upon his defeat,he decided not to attend the GAFCON II,held in Nairobi,Kenya,in October 2013. [5]
Mokiwa,a theological Anglo-Catholic,like his predecessor,was also strongly critical of the departures of the Anglican tradition taken by the Episcopal Church of the United States and the Anglican Church of Canada. He supported the Anglican realignment,attending the Global Anglican Future Conference in Jerusalem, [6] in 2008,and shortly after,the Lambeth Conference. [7] He also expressed his support for the Anglican Church in North America,launched in 2009. [8]
Mokiwa was deposed by Archbishop Jacob Chimeledya in January 2017,after he declined to resign in the wake of a corruption provincial investigation in the Diocese of Dar es Salaam. He refused to accept the deposition and filed a lawsuit against this decision. Mokiwa and Bishop Raphael Hafidh,of the Diocese of Kibondo,were both arrested after an angry exchange took place at a bishops meeting of the Anglican Church of Tanzania,in February 2017,but where released soon after. The Church of Nigeria is the Anglican church in Nigeria. It is the second-largest province in the Anglican Communion,as measured by baptised membership,after the Church of England. In 2016 it stated that its membership was “over 18 million",out of a total Nigerian population of 190 million. It is "effectively the largest province in the Communion." As measured by active membership,the Church of Nigeria has nearly 2 million active baptised members. According to a study published by Cambridge University Press in the Journal of Anglican Studies,there are between 4.94 and 11.74 million Anglicans in Nigeria. The Church of Nigeria is the largest Anglican province on the continent of Africa,accounting for 41.7% of Anglicans in Sub-Saharan Africa,and is "probably the first [largest within the Anglican Communion] in terms of active members."
The Anglican Communion Primates' Meetings are regular meetings of the primates in the Anglican Communion,i.e. the principal archbishops or bishops of each ecclesiastical province of the Anglican Communion. There are currently 38 primates of the Anglican Communion. The primates come together from the geographic provinces around the world for discussion and consultation. As primus inter pares of the communion,the Archbishop of Canterbury chairs the meetings,with the Secretary General of the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) serving as secretary.
Robert William Duncan is an American Anglican bishop. He was the first primate and archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) from June 2009 to June 2014. In 1997,he was elected bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh. In 2008,a majority of the diocesan convention voted to leave the diocese and the Episcopal Church and,in October 2009,named their new church the Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh. Duncan served as bishop for the new Anglican diocese until 10 September 2016 upon the installation of his successor,Jim Hobby.
The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) is a province of the Anglican Communion,and it is composed by 41 dioceses. The current Leader and Archbishop of Kenya is Jackson Ole Sapit. The Anglican Church of Kenya claims 5 million total members. According to a study published in the Journal of Anglican Studies and by Cambridge University Press, the ACK claims 5 million adherents,with no official definition of membership,with nearly 2 million officially affiliated members,and 310,000 active baptised members. The church became part of the Province of East Africa in 1960,but Kenya and Tanzania were divided into separate provinces in 1970.
The Anglican Church of Tanzania is a province of the Anglican Communion based in Dodoma. It consists of 28 dioceses headed by their respective bishops. It seceded from the Province of East Africa in 1970,which it shared with Kenya. The current primate and archbishop is Maimbo Mndolwa,enthroned on 20 May 2018.

The Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) is a series of conferences of conservative Anglican bishops and leaders,the first of which was held in Jerusalem from 22 to 29 June 2008 to address the growing controversy of the divisions in the Anglican Communion,the rise of secularism,as well as concerns with HIV/AIDS and poverty. As a result of the conference,the Jerusalem Declaration was issued and the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans was created. The conference participants also called for the creation of the Anglican Church in North America as an alternative to both the Episcopal Church in the United States and the Anglican Church of Canada,and declared that recognition by the Archbishop of Canterbury is not necessary to Anglican identity.
Nicholas Dikeriehi Orogodo Okoh is the former archbishop of Abuja Province and primate of the Church of Nigeria in the Anglican Communion. He retired on 25 March 2020. He has been married to Nkasiobi Amaechi since 1986 and they have five children.
Bernard Ntahoturi is a Burundian Anglican bishop. He was the Primate of the Anglican Church of Burundi from 2005 to 2016,and is the Bishop of Matana.
Foley Thomas Beach is an American Anglican bishop. He was the second primate and archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America,a church associated with the Anglican realignment movement,and is the first diocesan bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the South. Beach was elected as the church's primate on June 21,2014. His enthronement took place on October 9,2014. During his primacy,he served as chairman of the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans Primates Council and led the ACNA through a period that included the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jacob Erasto Chimeledya is a Tanzanian Anglican bishop. He was elected archbishop and primate of the Anglican Church of Tanzania on 21 February 2013 in a vote against the incumbent,Valentino Mokiwa,in a controversial election. He was enthroned on 19 May 2013 and also remained bishop of the Diocese of Mpwapwa. He was in office until 21 May 2018.
Donald Leo Mtetemela is a former Tanzanian Anglican archbishop. He was archbishop and primate of the Anglican Church of Tanzania,from 1998 to 2008. He is married and has seven children.
Maimbo William Mndolwa is a Tanzanian Anglican bishop. He is the Bishop of the Diocese of Tanga and was elected Archbishop and Primate of the Anglican Church of Tanzania on 15 February 2018,with his enthronement taking place on 20 May 2018. He is married to Frida.

Gervas John Mwasikwabhila Nyaisonga is a Tanzanian prelate of the Catholic Church. He has been Archbishop of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya since 2018. He was consecrated bishop on 2011. He previously served as Bishop of the diocese of Dodoma from 2011 until 2014. He then served as Bishop of the diocese of Mpanda from 2014 until 2018. He was President of Tanzania Episcopal Conference from 2018 to 2024. He was appointed bishop on 9 January 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI
Wilbroad Henry Kibozi is a Tanzanian Catholic prelate who serves as Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dodoma. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Dodoma on 12 February 2024 by Pope Francis. On the same day,he was appointed Titular Bishop of Zallata.
