Valletta Contemporary (VC) is a non-profit exhibition space in Valletta, Malta. It opened in April 2018 and is operated by the Norbert Francis Attard Foundation (formerly META Foundation). The gallery is housed in a restored 400-year-old warehouse on East Street, near St. Barbara Bastions and the Lower Barrakka Gardens. [1] [2]

History

The gallery was founded by Maltese artist and architect Norbert Francis Attard, who also serves as its director. [3] Development of the site took around ten years, during which three adjoining warehouses were restored and combined into one exhibition venue. [4]

Valletta Contemporary officially opened in April 2018 with Territorios Soñados, an exhibition by Spanish artist Carlos Coronas. [5]

Exhibitions

Valletta Contemporary presents both Maltese and international contemporary artists. Selected exhibitions include:

Activities

VC Editions

VC Editions was launched to support artists by producing limited-edition works in collaboration with the gallery. These editions are distributed through Valletta Contemporary. [14]

Events

In December 2019, Valletta Contemporary hosted the MET[A] Gala, a fundraising event combining contemporary art and fashion. [15] [16] That year, the gallery was also a venue for talks during the MICAS International Art Weekend, with speakers including architect Sir Norman Foster. [17]

Reception

Art critic publication C4 Journal described the exhibition they fade… at Valletta Contemporary as being housed in “a labyrinthine space within a four hundred year old former warehouse” that “reengages the body, prioritizing feeling and a primal sensuality.” [18]

Travel resources also highlight the gallery’s cultural significance. The official tourism site VisitMalta lists it among Malta’s key cultural attractions, [19] while Wanderlog notes its architectural setting, free admission, and programming that features both local and international artists. [20]
