Valmir Nunes (born January 16, 1964) [1] is a Brazilian runner. A former world record holder, he currently holds South American and Brazilian Ultramarathon records.

Career

Nunes initially found success in the 100-kilometre (62 mi) distance race, winning the world championship in 1991. [2] He also placed first in the U.S.A. National 100 Kilometer Championship, finishing before the first American. [2] In 1995 Nunes set the world record with a time of 6 hours, 18 minutes and 9 seconds in Winschoten, Netherlands. His record was not broken until 1998. [3] [4]

Nunes has also been successful in longer races. In 2001 he won the 246-kilometre (153 mi) Spartathlon in Greece in a time of 23 hours, 18 minutes and 5 seconds. [5] He is a former record holder at the 135-mile (217 km) Badwater Ultramarathon. In 2007 he was the first runner to finish the race in less than 24 hours, setting a course record of 22 hours, 51 minutes and 29 seconds. During the race, temperatures reached 114 °F (46 °C). [6] His record lasted 12 years, and was broken in 2019 by Japanese runner Yoshihiko Ishikawa, who stablished the new record in 21 hours, 33 minutes and 01 second.

In October 2010 Nunes attempted to break the world record for a 24-hour treadmill race. Although he won the race by running 215.60 kilometres (133.97 mi), he was unable to break the world record of 257.8 kilometres (160.2 mi). [4] [7]

Coaching

Nunes also coaches several runners, who compete in marathons and ultramarathons. [8] In 1998 Nunes encouraged his maid, Sirlene Pinho, to begin running competitively. She has since won a bronze medal in the marathon at the 2007 Pan American Games. [9]

Badwater Ultramarathon

The Badwater Ultramarathon describes itself as "the world's toughest foot race". It is a 135-mile (217 km) course starting at 279 feet (85 m) below sea level in the Badwater Basin, in California's Death Valley, and ending at an elevation of 8360 feet at Whitney Portal, the trailhead to Mount Whitney. It takes place annually in mid-July, when the weather conditions are most extreme and temperatures can reach 130 °F (54 °C). Consequently, very few people—even among ultramarathoners—are capable of finishing the race.

Spartathlon

Spartathlon is a 246-kilometre (153 mi) ultramarathon race held annually in Greece since 1983, between Athens and Sparti, the modern town on the site of ancient Sparta. The spartathlon is based on the run of Pheidippides, who ran from Athens to Sparta before the Battle of Marathon in a day and a half to seek aid against the Persians. Five Royal Air Force officers attempted the course in 1982 and the competition was started the next year. The winner of the first Spartathlon, Yiannis Kouros, still holds the record for fastest time at 20 hours and 25 minutes.

Scott Jurek

Scott Gordon Jurek is an American ultramarathoner, author, and public speaker. Throughout his running career, Jurek was one of the most dominant ultramarathon runners in the world, winning the Hardrock Hundred (2007), the Badwater Ultramarathon, the Spartathlon, and the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run (1999–2005). In 2010, at the 24-Hour World Championships in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France, Jurek won a silver medal behind Shingo Inoue and set a new US record for distance run in 24 hours with 165.7 miles. Jurek has followed a vegetarian diet since 1997, and a vegan diet since 1999.

Mary Jepkosgei Keitany is a Kenyan long distance runner. She is the world record holder in a women-only marathon, having won the 2017 London Marathon in a time of 2:17:01. As of November 2019, she sits third all-time at both the marathon and half marathon.

Arun Bhardwaj is an ultramarathon runner from New Delhi, India. He is one of the first internationally acclaimed endurance racers from India. In 2009, he won the 567 km George Archer 6 day race in South Africa and received international recognition for the same. Eleanor Robinson is a British former ultramarathon runner and two-time winner of the IAU 100km World Championships. She was the first woman to run over 150 miles in a 24-hour endurance race. Dan Lawson is a British ultra runner and charity worker from Brighton. Lawson also does charity work in India for OSCAR India and Skillshare International. He holds the course record for the Grand Union Canal Race and in 2016, he won the European 24 Hour Championships, and in 2020 set the fastest known time for Land's End to John o' Groats (LEJOG).

Kieren Dsouza is an Indian ultramarathon runner and endurance athlete. In 2016, he became the first and, as of October 2016, the only Indian to qualify for and finish the Spartathlon, a 246 kilometre footrace from Athens to Sparta held annually in Greece. Kieren, then aged 23, completed the race in 33 hours, 2 minutes and 25 seconds, standing 85th among 370 participants. Till 2016, only 29 athletes under the age of 25 had completed the race that has been held annually since 1983.

Michele Graglia

Michele Graglia is a model, author, fitness coach, and ultra marathon runner. His book Ultra was published by Sperling & Kupfer in May 2017. Originally from Taggia, Liguria, Italy, Graglia became an international model represented by Major Model Management in New York and the now defunct Irene Marie Model Management in Miami, FL, where he was initially discovered. He currently lives in Los Angeles, California.

Gerald Tabios

Gerald Tabios is a Filipino long-distance runner and Ultramarathon runner. Among his most notable races in the United States is the Badwater Ultramarathon. This is an annual race that stretches 135 miles through Death Valley, California in July. This punishing race ends after a steep climb of Mount Whitney. In the world of Ultramarathons this race, often reaching temperatures around 130 °F has frequently coined "The Toughest Foot Race in the World." Tabios is the first Filipino who is Badwater 135 finisher and a 5-time Badwater 135 finisher.
