Vandalia Lake is a reservoir in Fayette County, Illinois. Served by Illinois Route 185 and by rural roads, it is 5 miles (8.0 km) northwest of the small Illinois city of Vandalia. The city, which owns the lake for flood control and water-supply purposes, reports that it is 660 acres in size and has a shoreline of 12 miles in length. The lake has a marina, boat dock, campground, and beach. [1] Lake fishing specializes in stocked bass, including largemouth bass. The lake also offers channel catfish and bluegill. [2] Much of the shore of the lake has been developed as real estate. [3]
Water from Vandalia Lake is released into Bear Creek, a tributary of the Kaskaskia River. The lake is located in Shafter Township and Sharon Township, with a tiny fragment of the lake extending into Bear Grove Township. [3] At the time of Abraham Lincoln's service as a pioneer state legislator in the nearby Vandalia State House State Historic Site, a local population of black bears inspired the name of the creek and prairie grove. The bears have since disappeared.

Vandalia is a city in and the county seat of Fayette County, Illinois, United States. At the 2020 Census, the population was 7,458. Vandalia is 69 miles (111 km) northeast of St. Louis, on the Kaskaskia River. It served as the state capital of Illinois from 1819 until 1839, when the seat of state government moved to the current capital of Springfield. Vandalia was for years the western terminus of the National Road. From 1836 onward, Vandalia is the home of the Vandalia State House State Historic Site.

The city, which owns the lake for water-supply purposes, works with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to stock it with fish. The IDNR reports that lake fishing specializes in stocked bass, including largemouth bass. The lake also offers channel catfish, white and black crappies, and bluegill. The marina is located on the north side of the lake, and there are no restrictions on boat fishing.
Raccoon Lake, also called Raccoon Creek Reservoir, is a reservoir in Marion County, Illinois. Served by Illinois Route 161, it is 2 miles (3 km) northeast of the Illinois city of Centralia. The reservoir is 970 acres in size, has a shoreline length of 16.4 miles, and possesses an average water depth of 3.9 feet.
