Vanessa Shona Beavis [1] CNZM is a New Zealand anaesthesiologist and honorary senior lecturer of the University of Auckland. From 2020 to 2022, Beavis was president of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANCA).

Career

Beavis was trained in South Africa. Before coming to New Zealand, she worked in the United States. She was previously a house surgeon. [2]

Starting in 1997, Beavis had leadership roles at Auckland City Hospital, where from 2004 until 2020, she was Director of Perioperative Services. [1] She now consults for the hospital. During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Beavis prepared the hospital for the pandemic. [3] [4] She has also started an anaesthesia service in Auckland to assist people in New Zealand needing a liver transplant. [1] [2] At the University of Auckland, Beavis is an honorary senior lecturer. [2]

Beavis is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANCA) as of 2023. She joined its New Zealand National Committee in 2004, chairing from 2008 to 2011. She was also a member of ANCA's examining body from 2002 to 2014. She became a member of the council in 2012, and was president from 2020 to 2022. [1] [5] In the college's council, she was founding chair of Anaesthetists in Management and Perioperative Medicine, and developed Continuing Professional Development programme and the organisation's Diploma in Perioperative Medicine. She also promoted the cultural inclusion of indigenous Australians through Te Tiriti. [1]

In 2021 Beavis helped develop and launch the International Academy of Medical Colleges of Anaesthesiologists (IACA), which she is executive committee chair of. [1] [6] That year, she was also appointed to the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. [7] In the 2024 New Year Honours Beavis was named Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to anaesthesia. [1]

Eric Anson was New Zealand's first specialist anaesthetist. He was the first President of the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists (NZSA) and a member of the NZ Committee of the Faculty of Anaesthetists.

Perioperative nursing is a nursing specialty that works with patients who are having operative or other invasive procedures. Perioperative nurses work closely with surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurse anaesthetists, surgical technologists, and nurse practitioners. They perform preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care primarily in the operating theatre.

A joint venture was established between surgery and anaesthesia named the Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Deaths. It became the National Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Deaths (NCEPOD) in 1988 and published its first report in 1990. It now covers all specialities and covers all outcomes as well as deaths.

Ramani Moonesinghe OBE MD(Res) FRCP FRCA FFICM SFFMLM is Professor of Perioperative Medicine at University College London (UCL) and a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Critical Care Medicine at UCL Hospitals. Moonesinghe was Director of the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA) Health Services Research Centre between 2016 and 2022, and between 2016 and 2019 was Associate National Clinical Director for Elective Care for NHS England. In 2020 on she took on the role of National Clinical Director for Critical and Perioperative care at NHS England and NHS Improvement.
