Varun Tomar (8 September 2003) [1] is an Indian sport shooter, supported by OGQ. He bagged an Olympic quota berth for the Paris Olympics in the 10m Air Pistol event by winning a gold medal at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers on 8 January 2024 at Jakarta. [2] [3] [4] [5]

Early life and background

Tomar hails from Garhi Kangran village in Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh. Inspired by his cousin Olympian Saurabh Chaudhary, he took up the sport in 2017 under coach Amit Sheoran at Benoli village. [6] [7] After his World Cup medals in 2023, he was selected for the National Centre of Excellence and trains at the Karni Singh Ranges in New Delhi. He later joined the Indian Army and was selected for the Army Marksmanship Unit. He is now under National rifle coach Deepak Dubey. [6]

Career

Tomar won a gold medal in the Air Pistol team and individual events at the Asian Olympic Qualifier in Jakarta. [8] In 2022, he won a gold medal in the Air Pistol Junior men team event at the World Championship in Cairo. He also won a bronze in the Air Pistol Junior men event. [1]

In 2023, he won one gold, one silver and two bronze in the 10m Air Pistol events at the Cairo and Bhopal World Cup events. He also took part in the Baku World Cup. [1]

He had earlier won gold medals and set a new junior world record in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. He is the only Indian shooter to win a gold medal in ISSF World Championship, ISSF World Cup, Youth Olympic Games, Asian Games and Asian Air Gun Championship. He broke his own world record with a score of 245.5 and claimed gold in Junior Men 10m Air Pistol at 2018 World Championship in Changwon, Korea.

She was also conferred the Arjun Award for 2023 but missed the event on 9 January 2024 due to the Asian qualifier.

Shiva Narwal is an Indian sport shooter. He won the bronze medal in the ISSF world cup 10m Air Pistol mixed event along with Palak. He won the gold medal in Men's 10m air pistol team in the 2022 Asian Games.

Shri Nivetha Paramanantham is an Indian sport shooter.She won the Gold in the women’s 10m air pistol team event in the ISSF Shooting World Cup in Cairo.

Sarabjot Singh is an Indian sport shooter. He competes in the 10m air pistol discipline. He is part of the Indian shooting team at the 2022 Asian Games, Hangzhou, China. Indian 10m air pistol team of Sarabjot Singh, Arjun Singh Cheema and Shiva Narwal beat China to win the gold at the 2022 Asian Games. Sarabjot also won the silver medal for India in the mixed 10m air pistol with Divya T.S. in the Asian Games shooting competitions.

Raiza Dhillon is an Indian sport shooter. She qualified for an Olympic quota berth for the Paris Olympics in the women's skeet event by winning a gold medal at the Asian shotgun championships, an Asian Olympic Qualifier on 20 January 2024 at Kuwait city. She became the first Indian woman to potentially qualify for an Olympic skeet event. It also brought the Indian Olympic quota count to 19. The quota berth won by a shooter is a berth for the country and the Federation, which can nominate any shooter for Olympics, as per set criteria.

Tilottama Sen is an Indian sport shooter from Bengaluru. In October 2023 she won the silver medal in the women's 10m air rifle event at the Asian Shooting Championship at Changwon in South Korea, earning a quota place for the Paris Olympics. She is the youngest Indian to win a quota for the Olympics, and if selected to the Indian team, she would be the third youngest Indian at Olympics in Paris.
