The Vasse and Wonnerup Floodgates is a heritage listed site in Western Australia that comprises two locations. The two locations are the site of the Vasse floodgates on the Vasse River and the Wonnerup floodgates on the Wonnerup Estuary. In addition, the 2004 site of the Vasse floodgates was also the site of the Ballarat Bridge which was built in 1871 as part of a logging rail line where the Ballarat Steam engine was the first steam engine to operate in Western Australia. The installation of the floodgates caused the formation of the fresh water Vasse-Wonnerup Wetlands.

Vasse Floodgates

The original Vasse floodgates were built in 1907 by the Public Works Department [2] and made from local timber; the site chosen for the floodgates was near the existing Ballarat bridge. These gates were later refurbished in 1927, 1942, and 1991. The final refurbishment in 1991 was in response to the 1990 listing of the wetlands under the Ramsar Convention. Though the floodgate continued to operate as designed, by 2003 the gates were leaking salt water into the wetlands and had to be replaced. Investigation of the area revealed that the Ballarat bridge was in a state of disrepair and should be removed for safety reasons; once this occurred a new set of automated floodgates were built on the site. In 2004 with the new gates operating, the old floodgates were removed and a section was given to the Busselton Historical Society, which currently has it on display inside the Old Butter Factory Museum. Wonnerup Floodgates

Like the Vasse floodgates, the Wonnerup floodgates were built by the Public Works Department in 1907. The site chosen was near the Forest Beach Road bridge and like the Vasse floodgates, they were refurbished in 1927, 1942, 1991 and replaced in 2004. [3] The new site was 20 m (66 ft) upstream from the original gates. Once the new gates were operational, the old gates were removed and destroyed, though the abutments were left in place, with the south abutment having a high degree of authenticity from the original structure. Vasse-Wonnerup Estuary

The Vasse-Wonnerup Estuary is an estuary in the South West region of Western Australia close to the town of Busselton. The estuary is listed with DIWA. It was also recognised as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on 7 June 1990 when an area of 1,115 ha was designated Ramsar Site 484 as an important dry-season habitat for waterbirds. It is also the main part of the 2,038 ha (5,040-acre) Busselton Wetlands Important Bird Area.

Wonnerup House

Wonnerup House is a heritage-listed farm precinct in Wonnerup, Western Australia. The current house was built in 1859 by George Layman Jr., one year after the original house built in 1837 by his father, George Layman Sr., was destroyed by fire. The dairy and kitchen survived the fire because they were separate from the house. Stables and a blacksmith workshop were later additions to the farm. In the 1870s, when the lack of a school in Wonnerup was an issue for the local residents, George Layman Jr. donated land near Wonnerup House for a school, which was built in 1873. In 1885 a teacher's house was constructed. The precinct was purchased by the National Trust of Australia in 1971 and opened to the public in 1973.

The Nepean River railway bridge is a heritage-listed railway bridge that carries the Main Southern railway line across Menangle Road and the Nepean River located at the outer south-western Sydney settlement of Menangle in the Wollondilly Shire local government area of New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by John Whitton as the Engineer-in-Chief, of the New South Wales Government Railways and NSW Department of Public Works. The railway bridge was built in 1863 by Messers Peto, Brassey and Betts. It is also known as Menangle rail bridge over Nepean River and Menangle Railway Bridge. The property was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

Ballaarat steam engine

The Ballaarat steam engine was built in Ballarat, Victoria in 1871 and was the first 3ft 6inch locomotive built in Australia. It was purchased by Western Australian Timber Company, which was awarded one of only three WA milling concessions granted. The company had 181,500 acres to mill at Yoganup near Busselton.
