Vennture Brew Company is a microbrewery and coffee shop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States, that opened in 2018. Vennture was created by three photographers who turned their hobby projects in coffee and beer into a successful business; in 2022, Yelp listed them as the best brewery in the state of Wisconsin. Headquartered in a former hardware store, they are known for their "The Heights" saison. It is one of a small minority of US breweries that is partly or wholly Black-owned.

Vennture Brew Company was founded by Simon McConico, Robert Gustafson, and Jake Rohde, all photographers linked by a preexisting friendship. [1] [2] [3] Their inspiration for a combined specialty coffee shop and brewery came while on trips to the US states of Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, and elsewhere in Wisconsin. They learned that the two beverages share similar clientele despite being primarily consumed at different times of the day. [1] [3] [4]
McConico, Gustafson, and Rohde's experiences flowed into the unusual spelling of "venture", with two n's, and the company's Venn diagram-esque logo. The three wanted their work to exist at the intersection of "coffee, beer, and community". [3]
To create the business, the three owners brought their experience in hobby projects: Rohde had become consumed with the intricacies of roasting coffee, while McConico and Gustafson had been homebrewing for years. Transitioning to a commercial scale required a lengthy business plan, and to learn the fine details of running a hospitality business McConico took a job at a nearby taproom. [4]
As of 2022 [update] , Vennture is part of the less-than one percent of US breweries to be wholly or partly Black-owned. [5] McConico told Milwaukee Business Journal in 2018:
Traditionally, beer and coffee are both very white; beer specifically, very white and male. [Vennture] tears down some of the boundaries and the preconceived ideas of what these drinks are. Hopefully, it provides space and opportunity for people who are not the same to gather. There's not a lot of places in this area specifically where people can just go and hang out. [3]
Rohde left Vennture in late 2022 or early 2023. [6]
Vennture opened in July 2018, [1] supported by $22,000 of funding raised in a Kickstarter campaign. [3] They were the first company in the area to offer both coffee and beer options. [7]
In 2022, Yelp named it as the top brewery in the state of Wisconsin. [8] By then, it had become part of a slew of breweries located along a North Avenue corridor in Milwaukee and nearby Wauwatosa. [9]
The company began selling food sourced from Cranky Al's, a nearby restaurant, in 2023. As of the same year, the company's overall sales were divided roughly evenly between coffee and beer. However, while they could continue to increase their coffee roasting, their brewing system was operating at maximum capacity. [6] They addressed this dilemma by purchasing Biloba Brewing in 2024. Vennture's first location is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at 5519 North Avenue. The location straddles the city's Uptown Crossing and Washington Heights neighborhoods; news sources have placed it in both. [2] [3] [5] As of 2018 [update] , the owners McConico, Gustafson, and Rohde all lived within seven blocks of the building. [3]
McConico, Gustafson, and Rohde leased the space in February 2017 and converted it to its present use over 18 months. [1] [11] Their modifications included adding a five-barrel brewing system into the store's basement. [6] The location was previously divided into two storefronts that contained various businesses over time, including a hardware store. [1]
The primary colors used inside are blue and white, and the bar is constructed from upcycled hardwood floors. [1] Milwaukee Magazine has described the place as "a bright, welcoming spot ... with a friendly, and family friendly, neighborhood vibe." [12] It can hold about 50 people. [13]
Vennture Brew opened their second location in Brookfield, Wisconsin, on March 16, 2024. The building, situated at 2970 North Brookfield Road, was previously the home of Biloba Brewing. It is about 1,500 square feet (140 m2) large with the ability to hold up to 150 people. [13] [14] In early 2023, Vennture's ownership told the Milwaukee Business Journal that they were open to expanding, [15] as they had no additional brewing capacity. [16] An existing friendship with Biloba's retiring owners provided Vennture with what they called the "right opportunity" at the "right time" to build upon what Biloba had already accomplished. [10]
Vennture's flagship beer is called "The Heights," a table saison named after the neighborhood in which the brewery resides. [1] [17] It has been brewed since the shop opened. [1] [2] On Vennture Brew's opening day, six beers were available on tap, along with coffee- and espresso-based drinks as well as tea sourced from a company in Madison, Wisconsin. [18]

Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company is an American brewery based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was once the largest producer of beer in the United States. Its namesake beer, Schlitz, was known as "The beer that made Milwaukee famous" and was advertised with the slogan "When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer". Schlitz first became the largest beer producer in the US in 1902 and enjoyed that status at several points during the first half of the 20th century, exchanging the title with Anheuser-Busch multiple times during the 1950s.
Brains is a regional brewery based in Cardiff, Wales. It was founded in 1882 by Samuel Arthur Brain. At its peak, the company controlled more than 250 pubs in South Wales, Mid Wales and the West Country but the brewer sold most of its pub estate in 2022. The company took over Crown Buckley Brewery in Llanelli in 1997 and Hancock's Brewery in 1999. In 2000, Brains moved to the former Hancock's Brewery just south of Cardiff Central railway station. The Old Brewery, in Cardiff city centre, has been developed into a modern bar and restaurant complex.
Anchor Brewing Company was a brewery on Potrero Hill in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1896, the brewery underwent several changes in location and ownership throughout its history. After years of declining sales due to competition with larger breweries, Anchor was purchased by Frederick Louis “Fritz” Maytag III in 1965, preventing its closure. The brewery operated at its Potrero Hill location from 1979 and was one of the last remaining producers of steam beer, a variety of beer trademarked by the company.
Sprecher Brewery is a brewery in Glendale, Wisconsin, U.S. It was founded in 1985 in Milwaukee by Randal Sprecher, and is Milwaukee's first craft brewery since Prohibition. Sprecher produces an assortment of beers, flavored malt beverages, and craft sodas, and it is famous for its root beer.
The Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, doing business as Leinenkugel's, is an American beer maker based in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Leinenkugel's was historically distributed only in the Upper Midwest, but is now available throughout all 50 states. The company is the seventh oldest brewery in the United States, and the oldest business in Chippewa Falls. It is a subsidiary of Molson Coors. It produces both traditional beers, including lagers and ales, as well as a popular line of shandies, which are a mixture of beer with fruit juices, such as lemonade.
The Pabst Brewing Company is an American company that dates its origins to a brewing company founded in 1844 by Jacob Best and was, by 1889, named after Frederick Pabst. Lakefront Brewery, Inc. is a brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. The brewery is based in the Beerline B neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Founded in 1987 by brothers Russ and Jim Klisch, several of its brands are named after Milwaukee neighborhoods, such as Riverwest Stein Beer and East Side Dark. The brewery was the first in the U.S. to bottle fruit beer since prohibition was repealed, starting in 1992 with the seasonal Lakefront Cherry Lager. The brewery often uses Wisconsin-grown ingredients, including Door County cherries.
The Surly Brewing Company is an American craft brewery with facilities in Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, and is noted for primarily canning beers, rather than bottling. Initially available only in and around the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, the company expanded distribution to include all of Minnesota and at least 12 states and several international markets. During the early 2010s, Surly experienced rapid growth, with production of 21,000 barrels in 2012, 28,000 barrels in 2013, and 47,757 barrels in 2015. Surly's brewing system in Brooklyn Center is a 30 beer barrel (BBL) Sprinkman, one of four identical systems produced by Sprinkman of Wisconsin. The Minneapolis location has a 100 barrel system. Despite sharing a similar name and being headquartered in the U.S. state of Minnesota, the brewing company and Surly Bikes are separate enterprises. An agreement between the two companies allows the bicycle manufacturer to display the single word "Surly" on its products.

Hacienda Beer Company is a microbrewery in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is strongly associated with the Door County Brewing Company (DCBC), from which Hacienda was created in 2018. As of 2022, Hacienda brews their beer in DCBC facilities in Baileys Harbor and operates a taproom on Milwaukee's Upper East Side. Their beer is served both there and at DCBC in Baileys Harbor.
