Vera Tolz-Zilitinkevic FAcSS is the Sir William Mather Professor of Russian Studies at the University of Manchester.
She received a MA in Classics from Saint Petersburg State University in 1981 and a PhD in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Birmingham in 1993. [1]
She was elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2017. [2]
Nikolai Yakovlevich Marr was a Georgian-born historian and linguist who gained a reputation as a scholar of the Caucasus during the 1910s before embarking on his "Japhetic theory" on the origin of language, now considered as pseudo-scientific, and related speculative linguistic hypotheses.
Merle Fainsod was an American political scientist best known for his work on public administration and as a scholar of the Soviet Union. His books Smolensk under Soviet Rule, based on documents captured by the German Army during World War II, and How Russia is Ruled helped form the basis of American study of the Soviet Union, and established him "as a leading political scientist of the Soviet Union." Fainsod is also remembered for his work in the Office of Price Administration and as the director of the Harvard University Library.
