Veracruz Sporting Club is a Mexican football club based in the city of Veracruz, that competes in the Liga TDP. The club participated in the amateur era of the Liga Mayor from 1931 to 1933, and also played in the Liga Amateur de Veracruz.

History

The club was founded in 1908 by the native Spaniards living in Veracruz in the early 1900s. The first owners were the brothers Ángel and Mariano Rivera. The club played in the old Liga amateur de Veracruz from 1908 when in 1931 they were invited to play in the Liga Mayor after Club México and Real Club España left some spots open due to economical problems.

The Campeonato de Primera Fuerza decided to only admit clubs from the Mexico City and the club returned to Liga Amateur de Veracruz where they managed to win 12 titles till the league folded in 1943 after the Mexican league in Mexico city was professionalize and allowed all clubs from the nation to take part in.

In 1942-43 the club merge with cross town rival Iberia de Córdoba and formed C.D. Veracruz in order to take part of the 1943 Primera División de México tournament and so came an end to a great club who from 1908 to 1943 played many memorable games and managed to win 12 domestic titles and various friendly matches .

Recent years

In 2011, the club was refounded and joined the Tercera División de México for the Apertura 2011 tournament.

Liga MX, officially known as Liga BBVA MX for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional division of Mexican football. Formerly known as Liga Mayor (1943–1949) and then as Primera División de México (1949–2012). Campeonato de Primera Fuerza, later known as Liga Mayor, was an amateur football league founded by the first governing body of football formed in Mexico after the merger of the Liga Mexicana and Liga Nacional, it was called Federación Mexicana de Football Asociación . Asturias FC won the inaugural season and CD Marte were the last champions. It had the total participation of 18 teams, of which only 2 teams played their matches outside of Mexico City. The league was held from 1922 to 1943, when the first true national and professional league was started.

Iberia de Córdoba Sporting Club was a Mexican football club that played in the Liga Amateur de Veracruz and also participated in the 1921–22 season of the Liga Mexicana. The club was founded in 1915 and was dissolved in 1943 when the Liga Amateur de Veracruz folded to create the first national and professional league called Liga Mayor.

Iberia de Veracruz was a Mexican football club based in Veracruz, that played in the Liga Mexicana de Football Amateur Association from 1918 to 1920, and also played in the Liga Amateur de Veracruz. The club changed its name to Club España Veracruz in 1918.
