Verbena United Methodist Church was the first church constructed in Verbena, Alabama in 1877. Originally part of The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, the church is now a United Methodist congregation. The current minister is Rev. Jody Hill . [2]

History

In the late 1870s and 1880s many families fled the city of Montgomery, Alabama in fear of Yellow Fever outbreaks. Some stayed in hotels, but many prominent families built summer homes in Verbena. Not only did the new residents build hotels, stores and schools, but also churches. The Methodist Church was the first church constructed in Verbena in 1877, and the original white frame structure is still used as the Sanctuary today. [2]

Bellingrath Gardens and Home is the 65-acre (26 ha) public garden and historic home of Walter and Bessie Bellingrath, located on the Fowl River near Mobile, Alabama. Walter Bellingrath was one of the first Coca-Cola bottlers in the Southeast, and with his wealth built the estate garden and home. He and his wife, Bessie, lived in the home which has since been converted into a museum. The gardens opened to the public in 1932. The site was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on September 14, 1977, and on the National Register of Historic Places on October 19, 1982.

The New Market Historic District is a historic district in New Market, Alabama. The town was founded in the 1820s as a trade center along the road between Huntsville and Winchester, Tennessee. The town incorporated in 1837, and had grown to around 500 residents by the 1850s. Although much of the town was destroyed in the Civil War, some antebellum structures survive, including Classical Revival houses built in 1854 and 1860, and the Whitman-Cobb House built circa 1861.

The Cullman Downtown Commercial Historic District is a historic district in Cullman, Alabama, United States. Cullman was founded in 1873 by John G. Cullmann, who purchased land from the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Most early commercial buildings were constructed of wood, with the first brick building, a hotel and restaurant across from the L&N depot, completed in 1881. Most of the early wooden buildings burned, including the C. A. Stiefelmeyer Storehouse in 1892, which was replaced with the current Stiefelmeyer's building. A new post office building was constructed in 1910, at the same time as a major boom in construction. Following a lull during World War I, construction continued in the 1920s, including the First United Methodist Church in 1923. The majority of the 58 contributing structures in the district are one- or two-story brick buildings in basic commercial styles, some influenced by the Chicago School. Notable exceptions are the wooden Italianate Stiefelmeyer's building, the stone Gothic Revival First Methodist Church, and the Neoclassical Federal Building and German Bank building's corner cupola.
