The Vermont Frost Heaves were a professional basketball team in Vermont, United States, that last played in the Premier Basketball League, last coached by Joe Salerno.

History

The formation of the team was announced in December 2005 by founding owner Alexander Wolff, a Cornwall, Vermont, resident and writer for Sports Illustrated . The Heaves were originally part of the American Basketball Association from 2006 through 2008. They were the ABA Champions in the 2006–07 and the 2007–2008 seasons, under head coach Will Voigt. [1] The team is named for the frost heaving soil displacement known to affect colder climates. [2]

The Heaves were formed in 2005, and started playing in the fall of 2006 at the Auditorium in Barre, Vermont, and the Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, Vermont.

The Heaves started off with a 108–100 overtime loss at Quebec City before going on a 5-game win streak with wins over Montreal, Buffalo, Quebec City, and Cape Cod(2). An overtime loss at Strong Island was followed by a seven-game win streak ended by Quebec City in Barre, the team's first-ever home loss. Attendance was between 900 and 1,650 for the games.

The team ended the regular season 30–6. On March 29, 2007, the Frost Heaves won the ABA Championship, defeating the Texas Tycoons 143–95. [2]

In the 2010 off-season, a group of local fans bought the team, which had been on the verge of collapse, and established a non-profit fan-owned corporation named GO Heaves, Inc. to operate the team. However, on January 26, 2011 (in the midst of the season), GO Heaves announced the team was ceasing operations. [3] Their players were subject to a dispersal draft. [3]

Joseph Salerno Jr. is an American professional basketball coach, currently serving as the head coach of the Syrian national team. He previously served as the Head Coach and General Manager of Player Operations of the Moncton Magic also as the Vice President of Player Personnel for the Island Storm for six seasons, leading them to a three Atlantic Division titles, and two appearances in the NBL Canada Finals. Prior to his time in Canada, Salerno served as the Head Coach for the Vermont Frost Heaves of the now defunct Premier Basketball League.

The Halifax Rainmen were a professional basketball team based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. They played in the Atlantic Division of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL) and their home games took place at the Scotiabank Centre, formerly known as the Halifax Metro Centre. Andre Levingston was the owner of the Rainmen since he helped establish the team in 2006. The team played their first season in the American Basketball Association (ABA). However, after becoming unhappy with the ABA, they moved to the Premier Basketball League (PBL) for the next three seasons. In 2011, they joined the NBL Canada as one of the original seven teams. Despite showing success in the four seasons they spent in the Canadian league, making two Finals appearances, the Rainmen filed for bankruptcy in July 2015. Barre Auditorium is a 1,856-seat multi-purpose arena in Barre, Vermont. It was built in 1939. It was one of the homes of the Vermont Frost Heaves of the Premier Basketball League, along with the Burlington Memorial Auditorium. While the University of Vermont's Patrick Gymnasium hosts all Division I high school basketball semifinal and finals, the Barre Auditorium is the site of all Division II, III, and IV semifinal and finals.

The 2007 American Basketball Association All-Star Game was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the 10,595 seat Halifax Metro Centre from January 27 to 28.

The 2007-2008 ABA season was the seventh season of the American Basketball Association that lasted from November 2008 and ended with the championship game in March 2009 between the Vermont Frost Heaves and the San Diego Wildcats. The Vermont Frost Heaves won their league-best second title after defeating the Wildcats, 87-84.

The 2006-2007 ABA season was the sixth season of the American Basketball Association that lasted from November 2007 and ended with the championship game in March 2008 between the Vermont Frost Heaves and the Texas Tycoons. The season ended with the Frost Heaves winning their first ABA championship, 143-95 over the Texas Tycoons.

The Island Storm is an inactive Canadian professional basketball team based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The team is a charter member of the National Basketball League of Canada that began play in the 2011–12 season. The Storm plays its home games at the Eastlink Centre. Former Vermont Frost Heaves head coach Joe Salerno served as the team's head coach for the first six seasons until he parted ways with the team in May 2017. In 2021, the Storm were granted a one-year leave of absence after they were the last remaining team based in the Maritimes.

William Voigt is an American basketball coach who last served as head coach of Zamalek of the Egyptian Basketball Super League.

The 2008 American Basketball Association All-Star Game was held at the 1,856 seat Barre Auditorium in Barre, Vermont on March 21–22, 2008, where East defeated West in style, 161–140 in front of 1,500 basketball fans. Anthony Anderson of the Manchester Millrats won the MVP award. Senegalese player Issa Konare and Chinese Sun Yue were the only foreigners of the All-Star Game.
