Veronica Tan (born 4 December 1977) is an Indonesian politician and entrepreneur who is currently serving as the Deputy Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection of Indonesia. [1]

She previously served as the chairperson of the Indonesian Cancer Foundation (YKI) DKI Jakarta branch [2] and head of the Family Empowerment and Welfare Movement Team (TP-PKK) of DKI Jakarta. [1]

As an entrepreneur, she founded a beef importing company and also one of the founders of a home care service provider. [1] [3]

Personal life

After graduating from high school, she moved to Jakarta and majored in architecture at Pelita Harapan University. [4] She met Basuki Tjahaja Purnama at a church and married him on 6 September 1997, at the age of 19. [5] The couple had three children, Nicolas Sean, Nathania and Daud Albeneer. [6] [7]

She accompanied Basuki when he was inaugurated as Governor of Jakarta. [8]

When Basuki was detained for blasphemy, she read a letter written by Basuki to his supporters. [9]

On 5 January 2018, Basuki reportedly filed for divorce from Veronica. [10]

A court granted Basuki's petition for divorce in early April 2018, and gave him custody of the couple's two younger children. Their first child, Nicholas Sean Purnama, was entitled to determine his own custody status due to being of age. [11]

Gubernatorial elections were held in Jakarta as part of the 2017 simultaneous elections on 15 February and 19 April 2017 to elect the governor of Jakarta to a five-year term. Incumbent governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, popularly referred to as "Ahok", and his deputy Djarot Saiful Hidayat were running for re-election to a second term. Basuki, who inherited his current position from his running mate Joko Widodo when he won the 2014 Indonesian presidential election, would have become the first elected Chinese-Christian governor of Jakarta had he won.

Djarot Saiful Hidayat is an Indonesian politician who is currently a member of the People's Representative Council. He was the governor of Jakarta, in office between 15 June and 15 October 2017 after being acting governor since 9 May. He replaced his predecessor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama when the latter was found guilty of blasphemy against Islam. He was appointed by Basuki as Deputy Governor in 2014 to fill the gap left by the election of Joko Widodo as president.
