The Vertue Class of yacht is a 25'3" length [1] design by Laurent Giles dating from 1936, when Andrillot was launched. The class was not named Vertue until 1946: it collected the name in the wake of the win by Epeneta - a boat built to the design - of the Little Ship Club's 'Vertue Cup'. [2] In 1939, the Epeneta had completed a cruise from The Solent to Belle Île in Southern Brittany and back in only 19 days. The Vertue Cup, donated by Michael Vertue to the Little Ship Club in 1927, is given for the best log of a cruise longer than a week by a member of the club. [3]
The design has an enviable reputation as a long-distance cruiser, with several remarkable cruises completed by boats of this class and close derivatives, in particular by Humphrey Barton, in Vertue XXXV and by Eric and Susan Hiscock. Barton was the original owner of Andrillot. [4]
There have been minor variants of the design - most obviously in the shape of the coach-roof: the hull form has, apart from the size increase, remained consistent throughout. [5] Sail numbers ranging up to 230 are listed, suggesting that of the order of 200 have been built. [6]
The early boats were gaff-rigged; more recent ones have been bermuda rigged, with many older boats converted to a Bermudan configuration. [7]
The Vertue II [8] design is slightly larger at 25’ 8” overall with a 7’ 10” beam (6” wider) [9] and approximately 30 have been produced in GRP since the 1970s by Westerly yachts and by Bossoms Boatyard in Oxford. [7]
A yacht is a sail- or motor-propelled watercraft made for pleasure, cruising, or racing. Swan 48 is a GRP constructed, fin keeled, masthead sloop or yawl designed by Sparkman & Stephens with a design number 2079 and manufactured by Nautor Oy. The original 48 was designed to rate under the I.O.R. and at the same time to offer the comforts of a great cruising boat. Because of this design criteria and its extremely strong structure Swan 48 suits very well for trans ocean racing as well as comfortable cruising and even circumnavigating the world. It was in production between 1971 and 1975 with 46 hulls built in total. It is not to be confused with a German Frers designed Swan 48 model which was in production between 1995 and 2003. The original S&S designed Swan 48 is famous for its two wins in the Newport-Bermuda Race; 'Noryema VIII' in 1972 and 'Constellation' in 1992. In the US market Swan 48 was also marketed as Palmer Johnson PJ48.
Francis Charles Morgan-Giles was a boat designer and builder from Devon, England. He built rowing boats, dinghies, yachts and large motor cruisers. His boats were known for their high quality, elegance and craftsmanship.
The Minisail is a 13-foot single-handed dinghy which was designed by Ian Proctor in 1959 and became popular in the 1960s. It was the predecessor to the Topper and was the first British production boat to popularise the idea of the "sailing surfboard". As the Topper gained popularity in the 1980s, the Minisail disappeared from the scene. However, on 28 August 2011, a group of enthusiasts restarted the Minisail Class Association, which now has a small but committed following mainly in north-west Europe. Camper and Nicholson is a yacht design and manufacturing company based in Gosport, England, for over two hundred years, constructing many significant vessels, such as Gipsy Moth IV and Prince Philip's yacht Bloodhound. Its customers included Thomas Sopwith, William Kissam Vanderbilt II and George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough. Its yachts competed in The America's Cup, The Fastnet Race, the Olympics, the Ocean Race and many other yacht races. It also built a number of small warships, notably during the two World Wars, and some as late as the 1950s.
