The Vickers Petroleum Service Station is a historic building constructed in 1954 in Haysville, Kansas. [1] [2] It was the first service station to feature a hyperbolic paraboloid form, also known as a "batwing", developed by John M. Hickman [3] and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places September 30, 2019 [4]

Haysville's Chamber of Commerce has used the building as an office since the interior was remodeled in 2007. [5]

The next station to the north toward Spring Valley station is Woodcliff Lake and the next station to the south toward Hoboken Terminal is Westwood. The station contains one track while a single low-level side platform next to the station depot, resulting in no accessibility for handicapped persons under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

There are eight properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in Linn County, Kansas. Two of the sites are the location of historic events. The Marais des Cygnes Massacre Site is the location of the Marais des Cygnes massacre, an 1858 event during Bleeding Kansas in which pro-slavery advocates kidnapped 11 anti-slavery settlers, killing five of them. John Brown temporarily used the site as a fort, and the property was listed on the NRHP in 1971. The Battle of Mine Creek Site preserves the location of the Battle of Mine Creek, which was fought in 1864 as part of Price's Raid during the American Civil War. Confederate general Sterling Price's army was retreating after being defeated at the Battle of Westport and was attacked by pursuing Union troops. Price's Confederate lost heavily in men and supplies. The site was added to the NRHP in 1973.

The Columbia station, also known as Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad Depot or Katy Station, was built in 1909 by the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad in downtown Columbia, Missouri. The station was one of two train stations serving Columbia in the 20th century, the other being the Wabash Railroad Station and Freight House constructed the same year. The building is the terminus of the MKT Trail, a rails-to-trails project that was built on the former spur of the railroad. Having housed a popular local restaurant named "Katy Station" after the building, it now houses a bar name "Shiloh's."

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Baxter Springs Independent Oil and Gas Service Station</span> United States historic place

The Baxter Springs Independent Oil and Gas Service Station is a historic gas station located at 940 Military Avenue in Baxter Springs, Kansas, along the former route of U.S. Route 66. The station was built in 1930 by the Independent Oil and Gas Company; the company merged with Phillips Petroleum the following year, and the station became a Phillips 66 station. The station was designed in the Tudor Revival style so to resemble a small cottage; this style was popular among gas stations at the time, as oil companies wanted their stations to fit in with nearby residential architecture. An addition which served as an auto repair shop was added to the station between 1930 and 1942. Phillips operated the station until 1958, and it continued to sell gasoline until the 1970s. The building now serves as the Kansas Route 66 Visitors Center.

The Magnolia Service Station is a historic service station located on Old U.S. Route 66 in Texola, Oklahoma. The station, an affiliate of the Magnolia Petroleum Company, opened circa 1930. The station was one of the westernmost in Oklahoma and became one of the first stops for eastbound travelers to buy gas and auto services in the state. The main building of the service station is representative of the "house" style of filling station; such stations resembled small houses in order to fit into residential areas.

Vickers Petroleum Company was an oil company founded by John A. (Jack) Vickers, Sr. In 1918, Vickers established a refinery in Potwin, Kansas to process the output of recently discovered oil fields in Butler County.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kreinbring Phillips 66 Gas Station</span> United States historic place

Kreinbring Phillips 66 Gas Station is a historic building located in Lowden, Iowa, United States. The Lincoln Highway was established in 1913 and passed through Lowden. In Iowa the highway became U.S. Highway 30 (US 30) in the 1920s. The Tudor Revival-style cottage portion of the service station was built alongside of US 30 in 1934 following the specifications of the Phillips Petroleum Company. The gas pumps were located on a concrete median, no longer extant, in front of the station. August L. Kreinbring was the first owner/operator of the station and he created a park-like setting to the west of the station where highway travelers could relax. New owners built the service bay annex on the park area in 1949. The storage room on the north side of the cottage was added at the same time. The station remained in operation through different owners and brands until 1998. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bitting Building</span> United States historic place

The Bitting Building is a historic structure in Wichita, Kansas. It was built in 1912 as a four-story building replacing an earlier building on the site. Seven additional stories were added in 1919. Major renovations were carried out in 1959 and the 1980s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. It is at 107 N. Market Street.

John M. Hickman was an architect in Wichita, Kansas. His work includes the Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center, Wichita State University’s Ablah Library, and the Vickers Petroleum Service Station in Haysville, Kansas which was the first gas station to feature a futuristic "batwing" design. The gas station was added to the Kansas Register of Historic Places in August 2019 and the National Register of Historic Places in October 2019.
