Victor George Carrington was an Australian administrator. He was the second and last Government Resident of Central Australia,the short lived Territory of Australia which re-merged with the Territory of North Australia in 1931 to form the Northern Territory.
Following the reunification Carrington was designated as Deputy Administrator,based in Alice Springs,until he was again re-designated to being a District Officer in 1937. [1]
In 1934 Carrington was instrumental in prosecuting,Gordon Keith Freeman,the superintendent at The Bungalow for rape.

Harold George "H. G." Nelson was an Australian politician and trade unionist who was the first person to represent the Northern Territory in the House of Representatives. He arrived in the territory in 1914 to work as an organiser for the Australian Workers' Union (AWU),and was a leader of the Darwin rebellion of 1918. He subsequently served in the House of Representatives from 1922 to 1934,initially as an independent and then as a member of the Labor Party.
The Residency holds significance for the people of Alice Springs as a tangible symbol of their brief legislative independence from the rest of the Northern Territory. It also provided a hub of social and cultural activities for the local residents.

John Norman Nelson was an Australian politician. Born in Bundaberg,Queensland,he was the son of politician Harold Nelson. Jock Nelson was educated at state schools in Darwin before becoming a jackeroo and goldminer,and later a bore contractor at Alice Springs. After serving in the military from 1942 to 1945,he became a pastoralist. In 1949,he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Labor member for Northern Territory,defeating the sitting independent,Adair Blain. At this time,the member for Northern Territory could only vote on matters relating to the Territory itself. In 1963,he was re-elected unopposed,the last occasion when a member was returned to the House of Representatives in this fashion. He retired in 1966,an occasion used by the Country Party to take the seat. Nelson returned to pastoralism and served as the first Mayor of Alice Springs before he stepped down to become the Administrator of the Northern Territory (1973–1975) before his death in 1991.

The two territories were merged in 1931 to reform the Northern Territory. The seat of government of the territory was Stuart,a town that was commonly known as "Alice Springs" and would be officially renamed so in 1933.
