The Victorian Secondary Teachers Association (VSTA) was a Victorian trade union organisation which existed from 1953 to 1995. It was originally established in 1948, as the Victorian Secondary Masters' Professional Association, following a breakaway from the Victorian Teachers' Union, and became the VSTA in 1953. In 1995, the VSTA amalgamated with the Federated Teachers' Union of Victoria, which represented primary and technical teachers, to become the Victorian Branch of the Australian Education Union. [1]

Teachers working in the private schools system are covered by the Independent Education Union of Australia (IEU). In some states the AEU shares coverage of some members with the National Tertiary Education Union, Community and Public Sector Union and United Workers Union. Through the Federation of Education Unions, the AEU works closely with the two other Federal unions which cover educators in non-government schools and universities. The AEU is also internationally affiliated to the Education International, which the AEU claims is "the largest non-government organisation in the world."

Phillip Institute of Technology (PIT) was a tertiary college in northern Melbourne, from 6 January 1982 to 30 June 1992 at which time the school integrated as part of RMIT University. The college's buildings formed RMIT's Bundoora Campus and Coburg Campus. Coburg Campus was closed in 1997, with the site since serving as a series of secondary and primary schools.
Mary Bluett is an Australian trade unionist and the former president of the Victorian branch of the Australian Education Union (AEU). In 1974, Bluett became a branch representative of the Victorian Secondary Teachers Association (VSTA). The next year, she became a member of the VSTA's Central Committee. In 1982, she became the vice president of the VSTA, before being elected as the president of the VSTA in 1994. The VSTA ultimately merged with two other Victorian teachers unions to become the Victorian branch of the AEU. Bluett became the Victorian AEU's first vice president. She became the president of the AEU's Victorian Branch in 1998.
