Vira Motorko is a Ukrainian Internet activist and 2024 recipient of Wikimedian of the Year.

Biography and volunteer work

She worked as a geography teacher at the Rivne Humanitarian Gymnasium of the Rivne City Council. [1]

She first registered on Wikipedia in 2009, during her first year of university. Since 2012, she has been a member of the NGO Wikimedia Ukraine, conducted training for newcomers, helped with the competition Wiki Loves Monuments, and translated the Wikipedia interface. [2]

From 2014 to 2019, Motorko worked with Wikimedia Ukraine as a PR and project manager. Since 2019, she has focused on volunteer contributions to wikiprojects. In 2023, she received administrator rights on Wikipedia. [2] Besides developing the project, she hosts webinars and training sessions to help newcomers become skilled Wikipedia contributors. [3]

A Wikipedian in residence or Wikimedian in residence (WiR) is a Wikipedia editor, a Wikipedian, who accepts a placement with an institution, typically an art gallery, library, archive, museum, cultural institution, learned society, or institute of higher education to facilitate Wikipedia entries related to that institution's mission, encourage and assist it to release material under open licenses, and to develop the relationship between the host institution and the Wikimedia community. A Wikipedian in residence generally helps to coordinate Wikipedia-related outreach events between the GLAM and the general public such as editathons.

Wales selects the recipients and honors them at Wikimania, an annual conference of the Wikimedia Foundation—except in 2020, 2021, and 2022 when the recipients were announced at online meetings as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
