In the 2017 general election, Democrat Wendy Gooditis challenged incumbent Republican Randy Minchew; she won by almost 4%. [2]
In 2019, the same candidates faced off again, with each raising more than a million dollars for the race. [3] Gooditis won by roughly 5%. [2]

Eileen Robin Filler-Corn is an American lawyer and politician who served as the Minority Leader of the Virginia House of Delegates from January to April 2022, a position she previously held from 2019 to 2020. She previously served as the 56th Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2020 to 2022. She represented the 41st district in the Fairfax County suburbs of Washington, D.C., from 2010 to 2024. She is a member of the Democratic Party. She is also the first woman and Jewish person to serve as Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates.
John Randall "Randy" Minchew is an American politician and lawyer. A Republican, he was first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2011, and re-elected for two subsequent terms. He represented the 10th district, made up of parts of Clarke, Frederick and Loudoun counties in the northern part of the state.

In 2019, he successfully ran for the Virginia House of Delegates in district 40, defeating Republican incumbent Tim Hugo. The majority of the pre-redistricted 40th district's population and landmass was located in Fairfax County with a small part in Prince William County. Helmer currently represents the 10th district post-redistricting, which is located entirely in Fairfax County.

Herring initially planned to run for governor, but decided to run for re-election. Herring faced Republican nominee Jason Miyares in the general election. Herring conceded defeat at 5:02 PM EST the following day, November 3. Miyares became the first Cuban-American and Hispanic to be elected to statewide office in Virginia. Miyares was later sworn in on January 15, 2022.
