Ward Lynn Armstrong (born June 2,1956 in Bassett,Virginia) is an American trial lawyer and Democratic politician. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1992 to 2011,and served as the minority leader from 2007 to 2011.

Armstrong was raised in Bassett,Virginia,graduating from John D. Bassett High School in 1974. He then attended Duke University,where he earned a business degree in 1977. In 1980,Armstrong received a JD degree from the University of Richmond School of Law. During law school,he studied for a summer at the University of Cambridge in England. After law school,he worked as a law clerk to Justice W. Carrington Thompson of the Supreme Court of Virginia for one year. He has practiced law in Martinsville,Virginia since 1981.
He represented the 10th House District,and served on the Courts of Justice,Rules,and Finance committees. On February 24,2007,Armstrong was elected Minority Leader of the Democrats in the Virginia House of Delegates. As Minority Leader,he has organized the "51 Club" to assist candidates in an effort to establish a Democratic majority in the House of Delegates.
As of early 2008,Armstrong said he would oppose closing an exemption for one-on-one gun sales between individuals from instant background checks (the gun show loophole),even though he usually plays a key role in rallying Democratic support for Governor Tim Kaine's agenda,saying "My constituents pretty much expect me to oppose it," he said. "Carroll County is my district,and it¹s home to one of the largest gun shows on the East Coast." Armstrong,with two young daughters of his own,said he is filled with sympathy for the Virginia Tech Massacre victims but that it won't sway his opposition to closing the loophole. "As legislators,we have to be dispassionate when it comes to the law." [7]
The Virginia Fifth Congressional District Democratic Committee awarded Armstrong the A. L. Philpott Award for Leadership. He is past president of the Martinsville-Henry County Bar Association;a member of the Virginia Museum of Transportation's Board of Directors;and a member of the Norfolk and Western Historical Society.
Armstrong was defeated on November 8,2011 while running for election in the 9th House District. Armstrong was placed in the 16th District during the required redistricting after the 2010 census. The 16th district seat was held by Republican incumbent Donald Merricks. Armstrong chose to relocate and challenge Republican incumbent Charles Poindexter in the 9th House district. He left his home and moved into his mother-in-law's house in the town of Bassett. Poindexter defeated Armstrong with 53% to 47% of the vote. During his 2011 campaign Armstrong raised and spent more than $1,000,000.
Armstrong considered running for governor,Lieutenant Governor or attorney general in the 2013 elections but decided not to seek a higher office. [8] [9]

Henry County is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census,the population was 50,948. The county seat is usually identified as Martinsville;however,the administration building,county courthouse,and Henry County Sheriff's Office are located on Kings Mountain Road in Collinsville.The Henry County Adult Detention Center is located on DuPont Road in Henry County,just south of Martinsville.
Bassett is a census-designated place (CDP) in Henry County,Virginia,United States. The population was 1,100 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Martinsville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded along a rail line by the same family that later started Bassett Furniture. Bassett Furniture's headquarters have remained in Bassett since it began in 1902.
Thomas Bahnson Stanley was an American politician,furniture manufacturer and Holstein cattle breeder. A Democrat and member of the Byrd Organization,Stanley served in a number of different political offices in Virginia,including as the 47th speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates and as the Commonwealth's 57th governor. He became known for his support of the Massive Resistance strategy to prevent school desegregation mandated by the United States Supreme Court's decisions in Brown v. Board of Education,and Virginia's attempt to circumvent those decisions was known as the Stanley Plan.
Robert Creigh Deeds is an American lawyer and politician serving as a member of the Senate of Virginia representing the 25th district since 2001. Previously,he was the Democratic nominee for Attorney General of Virginia in 2005 and Governor of Virginia in 2009. He was defeated in both of those races by Republican Bob McDonnell. Deeds lost by just 323 votes in 2005,but was defeated by a wide margin of over 17 percentage points in 2009. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1992 to 2001.

A member of the Democratic Party,he previously represented the 39th Senate District from 2012 to 2024 and served in the Virginia House of Delegates from the 49th District from 2004 to 2012.

Eileen Robin Filler-Corn is an American lawyer and politician who served as the Minority Leader of the Virginia House of Delegates from January to April 2022,a position she previously held from 2019 to 2020. She previously served as the 56th Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2020 to 2022. She represented the 41st district in the Fairfax County suburbs of Washington,D.C.,from 2010 to 2024. In the general election on November 7,2017,Democratic nominee Justin Fairfax defeated Republican state Senator Jill Vogel to become the 41st Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.

Daniel Isaac Helmer is an American politician. He is a member of the Democratic Party. In 2018,he lost the Democratic primary for Virginia's 10th congressional district. In 2019,he successfully ran for the Virginia House of Delegates in district 40,defeating Republican incumbent Tim Hugo. The majority of the pre-redistricted 40th district's population and landmass was located in Fairfax County with a small part in Prince William County. Helmer currently represents the 10th district post-redistricting,which is located entirely in Fairfax County.
The 2019 Virginia House of Delegates election was held on Tuesday,November 5,2019,concurrently with the elections for the Senate of Virginia,to elect members to the 161st Virginia General Assembly. All 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates were up for election. It resulted in Democrats gaining 6 seats in the House of Delegates,and gaining control of both chambers of the General Assembly,marking the first time that Democrats held control of both legislative and executive branches in Virginia since 1993.

The 2021 Virginia attorney general election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next attorney general of Virginia. Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring attempted to win a third term. Herring initially planned to run for governor,but decided to run for re-election. Herring faced Republican nominee Jason Miyares in the general election. Herring conceded defeat at 5:02 PM EST the following day,November 3. Miyares became the first Cuban-American and Hispanic to be elected to statewide office in Virginia. Miyares was later sworn in on January 15,2022.
